Moses Hess (portrait, 1846)


German-Jewish philosopher and socialist, and one of the founders of Labor Zionism. His works included Holy History of Mankind (1837), European Triarchy (1841) and Rome and Jerusalem: The Last National Question, (1862). Hess originally advocated Jewish integration into the universalist socialist movement, and was a friend and collaborator of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Hess converted Engels to Communism, and introduced Marx to social and economic problems. He died in Paris on April 6, 1875.

Januar um 11 Uhr morgens ist vor uns, dem beigeordneten Vorsteher des Standesamtes zu Bonn, die in Bonn ansässige Hebamme Ester Frenkel erschienen, die uns erklärt hat, . . . daß gestern um fünf Uhr abends in dem Haus Nummer 807 ein Kind männlichen Geschlechts geboren wurde, das sie uns vorzeigt und dem sie den Vornamen Moises zu geben erklärt hat. Dieses Kind ist dem David Hess geboren worden . . ."

Translation: "In 1812, on January 22 at 11 o'clock in the morning in front of us, the Deputy Head of the Registry Office in Bonn, the Bonn-based midwife ester Frenkel appeared, to inform us, . . . that a child of the male sex was born yesterday at five o'clock in the evening in the house at number 807, whom she declared was given the name Moises. This child was born to David Hess . . ."
