Prince of Portugal Henry

Portuguese royalty, the son of King Joao I and Philippa of Lancaster, Duke of Viseu, Lord of Covilha and Prince of Portugal. He sponsored the first Portuguese voyages of exploration on the African coast, gathering around himself a famous school of cartographers, astronomers and seamen in the community of Sagras. Though he never made any voyages himself, he was a lead figure in the emergence of Portugal as a sea power and contributed much to the marine skills of his country.

Died 11/13/1460 OS, Vil de Infante.
