Nell Gwyn

British actress and courtesan known as "pretty witty Nell." Born to Ellen Gwyn, she was raised in a bawdy house. Not yet 15 and selling oranges in the pit, she was cast in a play and soon became a great favorite of her day. In 1667 she eloped with Charles Sackville. However she had caught the attention of King Charles II and before the year's end, the King was sending for her. She became a favorite of the king and bore him a son on 5/08/1670, Charles Beauclerk, who was later given a title. Gwyn's career concluded that fall. A second son was born 12/25/1671 who died in 1680.

Gwyn had several fine houses and in 1675, was named a Lady of the Queen's Privy Chamber.

She died of apoplexy 11/14/1687, London.
