Gould started her career writing for Gawker.com. She left the site in November 2007. Gould appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine in May 2008. The accompanying article discussed her experience blogging and oversharing.
Gould is the co-author, with Zareen Jaffery, of the young adult novel Hex Education (2007). She has written a collection of essays, And the Heart Says Whatever (2010) and a semi-autobiographical novel, Friendship (2014).
