Biography

Spanish naturalist, geologist and priest, known for his botanical collections made in the Dominican Republic.

From 1898 he spent six years in Argentina, then lectured a course in mineralogy at the University of Lima in Peru from 1905. He finally settled in the Dominican Republic in 1909.

His collections were particularly important, such that there are now 35 species named after him.

He died in Santo Domingo on 3 March 1926.

Sy Scholfield cites birth record quoted in Papeles del Padre Fuertes (1871-1926) by José Luis Sáez (Sociedad Dominicana de Bibliofilos, 1989), p. 93: "En la ciudad de Daroca, Provincia y Diocesis de Zaragoza á cuatro de Agosto de mil ochocientos setenta y uno: el abajo firmado Regente de la Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago de la misma, bauticé solemnemente un niño que nació á las cuatro y media de la mañana, hijo legítimo de Dionisio Fuertes y de Quiteria Lorén, conyuges, mis parroquianos, y naturales, aquél de esta Iglesia, y ésta de Retascón; se le puso por nombres MIGUEL DOMINGO."

(In the city of Daroca, Province and Diocese of Zaragoza on 4 August, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-one: the undersigned Regent of the Parochial Church of Santiago of the same, solemnly baptized a child who was born at four thirty in the morning, legitimate son of Dionisio Fuertes and Quiteria Lorén, spouses, my parishioners, and natives of this Church, and this one of Retascón; who was named MIGUEL DOMINGO).
