Norwegian zoologist, photographer, non-fiction writer, and radio and television producer. He created his own show at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, called "Naturmagasinet" (The nature journal'), which ran from 1966 to 1974.
He was a member of the Oslo City Council 1972-1976, but without any party affiliation. During this period he initiated the setting out of beavers in Østmarka, the forested area to the east of Oslo and part of the congregation of woodland areas known as Oslomarka. Beevers had up until this time been extinct in Østmarka since the 1800s.
Fjelstad has made over a hundred nature films, many of which have been shown abroad, also in the US where SBS in 1983 bought 15 episodes detailing Norwegian nature. He was taught by photographer and zoologist Per Høst and worked with him on the film Same-Jakki in 1956/57.
For over 20 years Fjelstad had a column at the newspaper Aftenposten, called "Naturen rundt oss" ('The nature around us'). He has published nearly 30 books mostly based on his own experiences with nature and wild animals in Norway, Asia, Africa, and America.
- (has as) student relationship with Høst, Per (born 5 December 1907)
Viktor E. quotes certificate of live birth in hand. AM or PM not specified. (Before noon is most likely correct as it's somewhat unlikely that a midwife in Norway would have written 1 for a time of 13.)
