Costa Rican lawyer, teacher, economist and politician. Founding member of the National Liberation Party and president of the University of Costa Rica. Facio attended primary in the Liceo de Costa Rica. He graduated from higher education in law and economics. Facio was a member of the Center for the Study of National Problems, ideological group of democratic socialist thought, member of the Social Democratic Party and later the National Liberation Party. He was constitutionalist deputy in the Constituent Assembly that drafted the 1949 Constitution Facio promoted university reform of 1957. He was dean of the School of Economics and Professor of Social Sciences and the School of Law, then rector of the University of Costa Delicious. He served as vice president of the Central Bank and then worked for the Inter-American Development Bank.
He died at age 44, on 7 June 1961 after accidentally drowning in sea water in El Salvador. He was declared a National Hero by the Legislative Assembly and the UCR campus is named in his honor.
