Shelley Berman (in the 1960s)

Biography

American comedian and cabaret monologist on TV and in films, including "The Best Man" (1964), "The Wheeler Dealers" (1964) and "Every Home Should Have One" (1970). Wry and acerbic, he zinged one-liners with impish intensity and had been on-stage since 1957. His albums won three gold records. While in his 70s, he released a new album, "Shelley Berman, Live Again!"

Berman won the first Grammy Award for a spoken comedy recording in 1959. He was perhaps most notable for his role as Larry David's father on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2002-2009), a role for which he received a 2008 Emmy Award nomination.

In the last twenty years of his life, Berman taught humour writing in the Masters of Professional Writing program at the University of Southern California, where he was a Lecturer Emeritus.

Berman died peacefully in his sleep from Alzheimer's disease-related complications at his home in Bell Canyon, California, in the early morning of 1 September 2017, aged 92.
