Biography

German-Israeli diplomat. He emigrated with his family to Jerusalem in 1933. He served in the diplomatic service from the founding of the state of Israel in 1948 until 1987, representing his country as Consul General and Ambassador on almost every continent. His postings included Munich, Cologne, Philadelphia, Lagos, Vienna and Canberra. Since 1997 he has worked as a consultant and in 1992 was honored with the Grand Cross of Merit.

Sy Scholfield quotes "Leben für Israel: Erinnerungen eines Diplomaten" by Yissakhar Ben-Yaacov (Hoffmann u Campe Vlg GmbH, 2007), p. 13: "Hamburg ... am siebten Dezember des Jahres tausend neunhundert- zweiundzwanzig vormittags um sechs drei viertel Uhr ein Knabe geboren worden sei und dass das Kind die Vornamen Walter Bernhard erhalten habe. So steht es in meiner Geburtsurkunde, die mein Vater am Vorabend des achten Tages nach meiner Geburt anlässlich der Brit Mila (Beschneidung) öffentlich verkündete."

Translation: [At] Hamburg ... on 7 December 1922 at 6:45 in the morning a boy was born who received the names Walter Bernhard. This is what my father announced publicly from my birth certificate on the eve of the eighth day after my birth at the brit milah (circumcision).
