German composer and organist. He is unrelated to Johann Sebastian Bach. He studied with his father, Gottfried, as well as with Carl Friedrich Zelter and Ludwig Berger. In 1832, he succeeded Zelter as the director of the Royal Institute of Church Music in Berlin. He also taught at the Royal Academy of Arts. His compositions largely consist of sacred works and works for keyboard. He also wrote a pipe organ method and a hymnbook. He died 15 April 1869, Berlin.
Sy Scholfield quotes from "»Ein Werk von unendlicher Schönheit«. Zur Überlieferung und Interpretation Johann Sebastian Bachscher Werke im zweiten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts in Berlin, dargestellt am Wirken des Berliner Organisten August Wilhelm Bach (1796–1869)" by Andreas Sieling, in "The Organ Yearbook, Volume 29" (2000), pp. 105-26: "Der laut Eintragung im Taufbuch der Dreifaltigkeitskirche am „5. October Nachts um 12 Uhr" im Jahre 1796 in Berlin geborene August Wilhelm Bach." (p. 105).
Translation: According to the entry in the parish register, Trinity Church, on "5. October at 12 o'Clock in the night" in 1796 in Berlin was born August Wilhelm Bach.
Note: Biographies give his D.o.B. as 4 October so presumably this has been interpreted as midnight between the 4th and 5th.
