American homicide perpetrator who killed her boyfriend Travis Alexander on 4 June 2008 at his home in Mesa, Arizona. His body was discovered in a shower. His injuries consisted of multiple stab wounds, a slit throat, and a shot to the head; the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
Arias' trial began on 2 January 2013. She testified that she killed Alexander in self-defense. She was found guilty of first-degree murder on 8 May 2013.
With this conviction, she is eligible for the death penalty. The aggravation phase of the trial was set to start on 9 May, but was postponed until 15 May 2013. In the aggravation phase, the jury will determine if there are "aggravating factors".
If the jury's answer is no, the judge may sentence Arias to life with the possibility of parole after 25 year or life without the possibility of parole. If the jury's answer is yes, the trial will enter the penalty phase, after which the jury will determine whether Arias should be executed.
If the jury does not unanimously agree on the death penalty, the judge will have the same two sentencing choices she had if the jury had found no aggravating factors.
Arias was sentenced to life in state prison on 13 April 2015 without the possibility of parole.
