Biography

A noted Swiss analyst and close associate of Carl Gustav Jung. She first met Jung after suffering a deep depression following the death of her father and was taken by her mother to Jung for analysis. Jung soon recognized Wolff’s keen intellect and psychological acuity and became one of his early collaborators, accompanying Jung as his analyst on his “descent” into the unconscious. During this time, Wolff also developed an intimate, physical relationship with Jung. When the Psychological Club was formed in Zurich she was elected the first president, a position she held for seventeen years. Regarded as a respected analyst in her own right, Wolff is considered a significant contributor to important aspects of Jungian psychology, including the concepts of the anima and animus and Jung’s theory of psychological typologies. In the year the C. G. Jung Institute was founded, 1948, Wolff presented her “Structural Forms of the Feminine Psyche”, an original and lasting contribution to Jungian psychology. In Volume 10 of the Collected Works, Jung confirmed Wolff’s important place in Jungian psychology citing her his “friend and colleague for more than forty years…” and stating she took “an active part in all phases of the development of analytical psychology… .” Wolff remained Jung’s peer and collaborator until her death.

Source Notes

from Zürich city birth registry office, by phone, after Alois Treindl visited the office and made a request. Time was originally given as 2.30 pm. Location of birth is Bahnhofstrasse 22. Birth registry entry number: 398.

As of 25-sep-2012, a dispute has come up over the birth time, because a hand drawn chart of Toni Wolff showing 2:30 AM has been discovered in the archive of the CG Jung foundation. The Zurich birth registry checked again and said they couldnot decide about the handwritten entry, whether it was 'nach' or 'vor' mittag. They sent a certified copy, from which it can be clearly made out that the entry shows 'vormittag', i.e. 2.30 AM.
