French-British nobility, the son of Robert, Duke of Normandy and Herleve, a peasant girl, a Norman monarch known as William the Bastard. When he was seven, his dad died and he became Duke of Normandy.
William married Matilda, daughter of the Earl of Flanders, in 1051. He was 5' 10" and she, 4' 2"; they had four sons and six daughters. Inasmuch as they were cousins, the Pope excommunicated them but later rescinded when they paid for a church edifice. It was a love match and his was faithful to his wife. Matilda died in 1083.
When Williams cousin, King Edward, died, the barons chose Harold as their ruler. To claim his inheritance, William met Harold on the battlefield at Hastings on 10/04/1066. He was crowned in London two months later, beginning a dynasty that ruled England for more than nine centuries.
In 1087, William went to battle against the King of France to avenge an insult. His horse fell on him and he died at sunrise in Rouen. A man of powerful stature, he had become fat in his later years.
