American poet and essayist, best known for a series of poems collectively known as "The Motorcycle Betrayal Poems." Wakoski is primarily associated with the deep image poets, as well as the confessional and Beat poets of the 1960s. Her poetry career began in New York City, where she moved with La Monte Young in 1960, and lived until 1973. She received considerable attention in the 1980s for controversial comments linking New Formalism with Reaganism.

Sy Scholfield quotes her in "Autobiographical Essay" in "Contemporary Authors Online" (Detroit: Gale, 2015): "I was born August 3, 1937, in Whittier, California, to Marie Elvira Cora Mengel and John Joseph Wakoski, who had been married on August 2, 1936. I was born just after midnight, about 12:30 a.m."
