Biography

American minister educated only in fundamentalist Christian theology, Tharp was unacceptable as a female minister in the more comfortable and profitable locales dominated by male preachers. Strongly driven to communicate her beliefs, she nonetheless became a Baptist preacher serving the religious needs of the poorest enclaves of Ozark Mountain people. With her handyman husband and daughter, they traveled the circuit in poverty as abject as that of their parishioners, at times living in their ancient jalopy.

Petite and caring, she struggled through the complex problems of superstition and illiteracy, bringing the promise of a heavenly reward along with music and the joy of salvation.
