Indian terrorism attack by armed gunmen thought to be outsiders. After 60 hours of fire and carnage, 195 people, including tourists, were killed and about 300 wounded. Fires raged about the city and the 10 terrorists were killed by Indian police.
The terrorists evidently hijacked a trawler and slipped into Mumbai (Bombay) by its inflatable dinghies on the evening of the 26th. They had evidently planned the attack so that some of them would focus on two luxury hotels in the city, the Taj Mahal and the Oberoi Trident,in addition to a popular restaurant, the Café Leopold, as well as the Nariman House business and residential complex which housed the targeted Jewish Chabad Lubavitch outreach center and a busy train station. The BBC reported that gunfire was also heard at the India Times newspaper office. They were armed with weapons, grenades and bombs and wreaked havoc on the city for the next three days, setting off fires, shooting indiscriminately and terrorising visitors and natives alike. The gunmen, all young men in their early 20s, were assumed to be Pakistani. All but one were killed.A group calling itself the "Deccan Mujahedeen" claimed responsibility for the attacks which lasted until the army and police secured the city on November 29th at around 9 AM local time..
