Biography
American tennis player, ranked overall third in the U.S. in 1979. A runner-up to Borg at Wimbledon, with achieving semi-finalist in the U.S. Open, he was accredited with the U.S. Amateur Singles title in 1971 and the Australia Singles Championship in 1977. He also supplemented his income by doing ads for sports equipment.
Despite his earnings and his prestige, his life began to disintegrate. He missed paying child support and encountered additional legal problems when he bounced a check used to purchase a $35,595 boat in 2000. In November 2003 he was sentenced to ten years' probation for his crime. In October 2005 he was arrested in Knox County, TN for failing to make payments, thereby violating the terms of his probation. In November 2005, he was sentenced to two years in prison.
