Phil Spector

Biography

American record producer and songwriter, noted for being a major mover in the industry. In the music business from 1953, he retired for a three-year hiatus 1966-69 and when he re-entered the competitive field, was more selective and reclusive.

Spector married Ronnie Bennett (b. 10/08/1943, NYC), a singer with the Ronnettes. He was arrested early on February 3, 2003 in an investigation of murder after the body of a woman was found at his suburban Los Angeles home, authorities said. He was released later in the day, after posting $1 million bond, said officials. The victim, Los Angeles resident Lana Clarkson, 40, was found in the foyer of Spector's ten-bedroom, eight-bathroom make-believe castle with the notoriously reclusive producer nearby.

On November 20, 2003, the reclusive record producer was charged with the shooting death of actress and model, Lana Clarkson. During a brief hearing in Alhambra, CA he pleaded not guilty to one count of felony murder. Spector claimed that Clarkson killed herself by accident, but in late September 2003, her death was ruled a homicide. Spector could face life in prison if convicted. He remains free on $1 million bail and must report back to court on January 23, 2004 for a status hearing. On September 27, 2004 in Los Angeles the record producer was charged with murder in the shooting death of Lana Clarkson. Spector remains free on $1 million bail. He claims that she shot herself. On September 26, 2007, the judge in Spector’s murder trial declared a mistrial after the jury reported that it was deadlocked. He was convicted of second-degree murder on April 13, 2009 in Los Angeles. The verdict carries a mandatory life sentencing scheduled for May 29, 2009 with a possibility of parole after 18 years.

Source Notes

Sy Scholfield quotes data from Ivy Press's book, "Heritage Odyssey Music and Hollywood Memorabilia Auction Catalog #616" (Heritage Capital Corporation, 2005), p. 172, which includes a photographic reproduction of Spector's birth certificate on the same page: "Here is his birth certificate from Prospect Hospital in the Bronx, New York, certifying that Harvey Philip Spector was born at 2:55 PM on the 26th day of December, 1939, with Doctor Mark Hornstein attending." Previously, LMR had entered 12/25/39 at 00:01 AM saying "Steinbrecher quotes Tashi Grady from Spector." She added "(December 26 also seen: might he have said "midnight?") "
