Biography
American conductor, longtime musical director of the Atlanta Symphony and dean of American choral conducting. Shaw was the founder the "Collegiate Chorale" in 1941, of the "RCA Victor Chorale" 1944-1948, and "The Robert Shaw Chorale" in 1948, directing it until 1953. Eight years later, he became the associate conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra. He especially loved working with amateur singers, whom he cultivated with a methodical, humorous style. "Singing, like sex, is far too important to leave to the professionals," he said.
Shaw suffered a fatal stroke on January 25, 1999 in New Haven, CT.
