German thermodynamics and high school teachers.
In the years 1937-1945 he was a professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig and director of the "Institute for Research Engine" of the German Research Institute for Aviation in Brunswick-Völkenrode. From 1945-1952, he held the Chair of Thermodynamics at the Technical University of Braunschweig.
In the years 1952-1961 he was Professor of Thermodynamics at the Technical University of Munich, which he was rector from 1956 to 1958.
Schmidt invented, among other things, the Alfol insulation ( aluminum foil ) and in 1921 the heat flow meter .After it is Schmidt number called (Sc). It indicates the ratio of convective to diffusive mass transport. He has also engaged extensively with the thermodynamics of rocket motors
1958 Smith was elected a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. In 1964 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit . He was winner of the Ludwig-Prandtl-Ring , the Max Jakob Memorial Award and the Grashof Commemorative Medal.
