Ernst Reyer

French opera composer and music critic.

An admirer (but not imitator) of Berlioz and Wagner, he composed orchestral and stage works with a fashionably exotic flavour and two highly successful operas, Sigurd (1884) and Salammbô; (1890). His music shows discipline and delicate orchestral colouring yet lacks melodic distinction and individuality. As a writer contributing to several journals including Journal des débats (1866-98), he preferred the music of Gluck, Weber, Schumann and Berlioz, distrusting progressive ideas, especially uncritical Wagnerism.

He died 15 January 1909.
