British terrorist who attempted to light explosives in his shoe while on flight from Paris to Miami. He was refused boarding on another airline the day before. He was heard to chant or pray out loud before he lit a match on the plane; however the smell of the match alerted a flight attendant and he was subdued by passengers and crew-members and turned over to authorities in Boston, where the plane was diverted.
He was identified as a small-time British criminal who converted to Islam in prison and then joined extremist groups in a London mosque. He adopted the name of Abdel Raheem, and was also known as Tariq Raja.

NY Times said he was born in Farnborough Hospital in Bromley in Southeast London in 1973.
