At the advice of friends, he attended night scool to study law and landed a job in 1975 as an attorney at U.S. Steel.
In 1979 he moved on to the financial services industry with a job at Commercial Credit Company and worked his way up the ladder to become executive vice president in 1996. In 2000 he was promoted to chief administrative officer and a year later became COO. The company was folded into Travelers Insurance Company. When Travelers entered difficult straits, he drafted take-over documents while Citigroup made its bid for the company.
In 2003 he was named CEO of Citigroup and assumed the chairman's post in 2006.
