British writer; his works, widely considered to be complex and profound, include "Wolf Solent," 1929 and the 1,120 page novel, "A Glastonbury Romance," 1932. Powys’ novels are rich in characterization, highly evocative of place and filled with psychological analysis although some readers describe them merely as verbose.

The son of a country parson, Powys grew up in the Dorset-Somerset countryside with his brothers, Llewelyn and Theodore, who both became writers as well. Despite the obvious importance of his homeland as seen in many of his stories, Powys spent 25 years of his life in the United States where he supported himself by lecturing. His first novel was "Wood and Stone," 1915.

In 1930, after the major success of his novel "Wolf Solent," he devoted himself entirely to his writing career. He spent the next five years in solitude in his Upstate New York home, completing several books including his autobiography in 1934. Powys died in 1963.

Source Notes

Garry Phillipson quotes Morine Krissdottir, a Powys scholar who is currently writing his biography, early 2002, "Also very recently I got the (totally) accurate JCP birth date. I found it in the father's pocket diary which I found in the Powys Collection. It never occured to me to look there for it as the diary is just notes on sermons and parochial visits, and certainly he never bothered with noting the other ten children, but first born, first son etc. THE TIME IS 1.35 P.M. Not that different from what we had [PT notes that 13:25 was given in the original entry] but nice to know.... he was definitely born in the vicarage at Shirley which was then a tiny village about 6 miles from Ashbourne, Derbyshire....."
