Indian yogi and leader of the School of Transcendental Meditation, internationally known for supplicants who included at one time the Beatles George Harrison and John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Mike Love of the Beach Boys and Mia Farrow (who reported disillusionment when she left). Many of the hip generation took up TM to develop their capacity for relaxation and concentration.
Later, the Maharishi lived in Seelisberg, Switzerland (1968 - 1990) and Vlodrop, Netherlands (1991 - 2008) but continued to travel to the US and India. About five million followers around the world murmured mantras and claimed that TM sessions twice daily relieve stress and improve their health.
He died on 5 February 2008 in Vlodrop.
Paul Mason quotes "The Maharishi," (Pub. Element, Rockport, MA, 1994, p.10), and adds in a note, "This is the day of his birth as given by his uncle Raj Vanna, the date his devotees celebrate. Other dates have been suggested, including 10/18/1911, 10/18/1918 and 1/12/1918."
