[edit] Biography
Portuguese royalty, founder of the House of Aviz. Joao was the bastard son of Pedro I and was known as John the Bastard, or alternately, Joao de Aviz o Grande. When John's father died in 1367, his half-brother Ferdinand took the throne, and when Ferdinand died in 1383, John took over as Protector of the Realm. In April 1385, he was crowned king. He married Philippa of Lancaster in February 1387.
John's armies defeated the Spanish forces and helped guarantee the future independence of Portugal. His alliance with England is the oldest in force, still in existence in 2000.
John's eldest son was Edward (Duarte) who succeeded him before Alfonso V, then Joao II, Manuel I and Joao III. One of his sons was Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) who contributed so much to Portuguese marine skills. John died on 8/14/1433 OS, Lisbon, Portugal.
