German poet and playwright, who was the centre of a circle of literary figures drawn together in Munich by Maximilian II of Bavaria.

In 1840 his extremely successful Gedichte (“Poems”) appeared. It ran to 100 editions in his lifetime and earned him a pension from the king of Prussia, Frederick William IV.

Geibel may be regarded as the leading representative of German lyric poetry between 1848 and 1870.

He died 6 April 1884, Lübeck.
