Biography
Designated German President, election expected on 18 March 2012. The President in Germany is the formal head of state without executive power, a bit like the king/queen in a constitutional monarchy.
Gauck was a Protestant pastor in East Germany, and an anti-communist civil rights activist. After German reunification in 1990, he was elected by the Bundestag as the first Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Archives, serving from 1990 to 2000. The institution was named after him the Gauck Behörde.
He was nominated as the candidate of the SPD and the Greens for President of Germany in the 2010 election, but narrowly lost to Christian Wulff, the candidate of the government coalition. In 2012 Wulff resigned and Gauck was chosen as presidential candidate be the four major German parties. His election is secure.
