Italian professional cyclist, placing in the Tour de France three times. Cipollini, who began his professional career as a road racer in 1989, is noted for his outstanding ability as a sprinter.

During the la Vuelta a España in September 2000, Cipollini, often referred to as "The Lion King" or "Super Mario," punched fellow cyclist Spaniard Francisco Cerezo. He apologized for his behavior but said that Cerezo had provoked him. As a result, he was ejected from the race, later fined and suspended by his team. A further suspension from all competition during February 2001 left Cipollini seemingly unconcerned.
