Peruvian-American anthropologist and mystic, the author of "The Teachings of Don Juan," 1968, "The Separate Reality," 1971, "Tales of Power," 1974 and "Trilogy," 1974. While a student, he spent five years in Mexico as an apprentice to a Yaqui Indian sorcerer. Called by some "the father of the New Age movement," Castaneda's books charter alternate realities and sparked wide interest in New Age Spirituality.
Highly reclusive all of his life, Castaneda always avoided the spotlight. Even though he made millions of readers throughout the world, his ten books continue to sell in 17 languages and he once appeared on the cover of Time magazine, he rarely spoke or appeared in public, nor did he give interviews.
Died of liver cancer on 27 April 1998 at his home in Los Angeles, CA.
Richard Ideman quotes Cosmic Seed magazine. Robert Jansky gives 1:45 PM from Astrological Review, 1973/74. Penfield Collection quotes both sources for 1:59 PM. Different reports give his birth place as Cajamarca, Peru or Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In July 2014, Lepoivre mentions Kannon McAfee as a source for 9 am birthtime. On 12 July 2014 McAffee wrote on the forum:"I possess a photocopy of the original birth certificate from Cajamarca, Peru. For years times around 2 pm have been passed around after the 5 March 1973 TIME magazine cover article. It appears that a TIME magazine Peruvian correspondent glanced at the birth manifest record made the next day at 2:30 PM and mistook this for the birth time. In fact the document clearly shows that the date of birth was on 25 December 1925 at "nueve a.m." Nine AM. "
