Biography
Japanese Princess, the daughter of Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako in Tokyo after eight years of childless marriage. Both mother and daughter are in good health and happy. The new princess will, as tradition demands, be named by her
grandfather.
Under Japanese law, only males may assume the throne. The last reigning empress was Gosakuramachi in 1762. The imperial family has not had a boy since Naruhito's younger brother, Prince Akishino, was born in 1965; the last seven royal births have been female.
