Shmuel Yosef Agnon

Biography

Israeli writer who was one of the leading modern Hebrew novelists and short-story writers. In 1966 he was the corecipient, with Nelly Sachs, of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Agnon was born in Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (today Ukraine). He later immigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine, and died in Jerusalem on 17 February 1970.

His works deal with the conflict between the traditional Jewish life and language and the modern world. They also attempt to recapture the fading traditions of the European shtetl (village). In a wider context, he also contributed to broadening the characteristic conception of the narrator's role in literature.

Source Notes

Starkman quotes Dan Laor's biography: Agnon was born on 18 Av 5647 (equal to 8 August 1887 NS) according to his passport as well as other official documents. Agnon claimed that he was born on the symbolic date of 9 AV 5648 (equal to 17 July 1888) but this date is definitely incorrect.

In one of his autobiographical stories he told he was born at the time of Mincha, the afternoon prayer. In 1978 his daughter Emuna wrote me that we can't trust this frame of time.

Starkman rectified it to 15.22.52 LT.
