Singapore Airlines, Boeing 747 Flight No.006 bound for Los Angeles out of Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek Airport crashed shortly after take-off from the international airport in Taipei, Taiwan. Initial reports said the Boeing 747 experienced some sort of wind shear upon takeoff at 11:18 p.m. local time and fell flat to the ground.

The plane had inadvertently taken the wrong runway in near-typhoon conditions of driving rain.

The crash claimed 82 lives out of the 179 passengers and crew, many burned to death while still strapped in their seats.
