Biography
International aircraft crash of one of the most elegant planes in the sky, the Concorde, at Gonesse, a southwestern suburb of Paris, France. After taking off at 4:44 PM from Paris, the big ship went down two minutes later with one engine on fire, crashing into a small hotel before fully reaching airborne status.
A tour party of Germans traveling to New York for a Caribbean cruise comprised the bulk of the passengers. At least 113 people died on board plus four in the hotel.
It was the first fatal crash for the needle-nosed supersonic aircraft and all seven of the Concordes were grounded, pending investigation. For 30 years these ships were the pride of French and British aviation for their luxury, safety and speed.
The pilot, Christian Marty, was born 11/12/1945, Paris, time unknown.
Report 8/16/00: LONDON (Reuters) - Britain confirmed Wednesday it was rescinding Concorde's right to fly until the troubled supersonic jet, which crashed because of a
burst tire, could be proved to be safe. CAA chairman Malcolm Field told a news conference that the investigation showed a tire burst was the primary cause of the accident. The jet burst into flames and crashed into a hotel just 90 seconds after take-off from Paris. The tire -- which French colleagues said had burst after hitting a metal strip -- threw up debris that punctured one or more fuel tanks. Fuel gushed out and caught fire within a few seconds. There was loss of thrust in one engine, then two.
