Biography

Jordanian royal family, the Prince of Jordan and the eldest son of King Hussein and his second wife, Princess Muna, to whom he was married from 1961-72. His mother was the daughter of a British army officer. The powers of the monarchy passed from his dying father on 2/06/1999 after nearly a half century rule by Hussein; he took the oath of office the next day. He was crowned king on 2/06/1999, 4:09 EET.

The government made every attempt to insure a smooth transition to the 37-year-old Abdullah, bestowing all royal authority, including the ability to mobilize the military, dismiss parliament and name Cabinet members. His first move as king was the designation of his 18-year-old half brother Hamzeh as crown prince.

As a gentleman soldier, Abdullah was an accomplished marksman, a helicopter and jet-fighter pilot, a deep-sea scuba diver and an avid collector of antique weaponry. Since his marriage to Princess Rania, he has been a contented and private family man, the father of four-year-old Hussein and two-year-old Iman. A product of elite British and American schools, he took a yearlong course in international studies at Oxford and Georgetown before taking his role as Jordan's top counter terrorism specialist and troop leader. He build a reputation as the family peacemaker and a fierce protector of his father's interests.

As a career military officer for 18 years, Abdullah has the army's allegiance as one of their own.

In January 1999, Hussein named Abdullah as his successor, bypassing his brother Hassan, who had been groomed for the throne for 34 years. Hussein reportedly accused Hassan of overstepping his authority by trying to purge military officers and ambassadors. Abdullah lacks his dad's deep political and diplomatic experience, leaving some experts wondering if he will be able to negotiate the complex web of the Middle East.

Source Notes

Deirdre Carmichael quotes the Jordan Times website for the accurate birth information of King Abdulla: It was the Monarch's late father, King Hussein, who announced that Prince Abdullah, his eldest son, had been born at 5:23 AM on January 30, 1962. In a Royal Decree that followed on the same day, the newborn was designated as Crown Prince of Jordan.

(Formerly, Isaac Starkman, Tel Aviv, Israel, reports in Considerations Spring 1999 that "Abdullah was born on 30 January 1962 at 5:20 AM in Mannam, according to the local newspapers from the day he was born." Starkman gives Jordan independence on 5/25/1946, 11:00 AM EET.

Whitman reports the birth in "New World Astrology," 3/1962 as January 31, 1962, 3:00 AM. January 30, 1962 is given by the Danish National TV, by the Italian press and by every reference source checked. Deirdre Carmichael of the Federation of Australian Astrologers Inc. sends news clippings, one dated January 30th, Beirut, Lebanon announcing a birth "this morning," and the other from The Melbourne Sun, dated January 31, 1962, "birth this morning."

Ahmed Hamo writes, 4/14/1999, from Jordan, "The day in Jordan begins at midnight, EET. In view of documents and B.C. of Jordan, Abdullah is born in the dawn of 31st of Jan.62;" however, Hamo does not have a copy of the B.C. Zip Dobyns quotes an Israeli astrologer for the January 31st date.

Sally Davis writes, "I found details of his birth in the Times of 31 January 1962, p.10 that he was born in the Falastine Hospital in Amman. No time of birth was given; however, since schools and offices were given the full day off to celebrate, it was most likely an early morning birth, to declare a holliday before the workday had begun."

(Joseph Silveira deMello writes that the Islamic style gives dates from daybreak to daybreak. If this custom was still in use when Abdullah was born, 3:00 AM, being pre-dawn, would be considered to be January 30 in Jordan and the 31st by western style. Roxana Muise confirms that the Jordanian day once began at daybreak but date unavailable at this time of when the standard was changed to begin at midnight.)

Lisa Bartels gives the date of Queen Rania, 8/31/1970, born in Kuwait City "to a notable Jordanian family of Palestinian origin," from the October 2001 edition of Cleo (Egyptian magazine in English).
