The national chart of Argentina Argentina formally declared its independence as a nation state in 1816, under the sensitive,
intuitive sign of Cancer. This country was born under a full Moon, and therefore whatever
changes take place in the fabric of the nation tend to occur with drama, intensity, and whole-
hearted emotional commitment. An inherent tension between Argentina's need for global
involvement and a naturally inward-looking, conservative and self-sufficient quality in the people
themselves leads to a constantly changing society which always seeks new and better ways of
living and interacting. Uranus, transiting through Aquarius over the next few years, will move
across Saturn in the Argentinian chart, and Pluto, transiting through Sagittarius, will move
across Neptune - both transits suggesting that challenges in the economic and financial
structures of the country will require a rethinking of the use of natural resources and an
increased effort at establishing greater openness in political and financial dealings both within
the country and with Argentina's neighbours. The movements of these two outer planets may be
reflected in a certain amount of economic difficulty for a time, but the meaning and end result
are likely to be extremely positive and involve a more realistic and flexible spirit which can help
to improve the material and social conditions of everyone living within the country's borders. A
little later, when Uranus moves into Pisces, it will form a happy and dynamic aspect to
Argentina's Sun, suggesting that the period of difficulty and readjustment will be followed by a
time of optimism, buoyancy, and creative inspiration. Argentina's Sun forms a dynamic aspect to
Pluto in the country's birth chart, suggesting that this nation has been through many
incarnations and will have many more, always rising from its internal crises to renew its strength
and surprise the world yet again. The next few years are likely to reflect such a period of tension
and rebirth.
In the horoscope of Austria, the transformative effects of Pluto are likely to be reflected in an
increasing recognition of the importance of compromise and friendly relations with other
nations. This will no doubt be one of the most important outgrowths of European Union for all
participating nations, but it particularly emphasises a quality present in Austria's birth chart -
the fact that its "destiny" or purpose is inextricably linked with other countries and that it grows
and flourishes through the development of partnerships, economic and cultural. Any tendency to
isolation or conflict with other nations is likely to create immediate difficulties over the next few
years, and during the time of the Millennium and afterward a new outlook and attitude toward
her neighbours is likely to transform Austria's awareness of her place in the world. Meanwhile
Uranus, planet of change and disruption, will be arriving back at its place in the country's natal
chart - a full 84-year cycle - and this emphasises new attitudes and approaches toward "friends"
which will undoubtedly breathe new life into cultural and creative ventures and bring about an
entirely new feeling of belonging to a global community. Neptune, planet of dreams and
disillusionment, will be forming an opposition to its natal place, which suggests that this
expansion and opening up of vision may be accompanied by a certain sadness, a feeling of loss of
roots and a sense of the national identity disintegrating. Because Austria was born as an
independent nation under the fixed sign of Scorpio, with another fixed sign, Taurus, at the
Ascendant, there is a certain resistance to such changes which may cause many people to feel
threatened. And change is indeed in the air. But as the planets move further along, especially
when Uranus enters Pisces in the years following the Millennium, the positive and expansive
effects of these changes, culturally, intellectually, and spiritually, are likely to be clear to
everyone.
Belgium formally proclaimed its existence as an independent state on 4 October 1830, under the
aesthetically sensitive, diplomatic, clear-thinking sign of Libra. With a powerful aspect between
the Sun and Pluto in the national horoscope, Belgium is never quite what it seems; for although
geographically small and without military might, this nation has the capacity to wield
tremendous power from behind the scenes. The Moon in the national chart is placed in the
pleasure-loving, earthy sign of Taurus, reflecting another important quality in the collective
psyche of this nation. Recently the country has enjoyed what is known astrologically as its
"Uranus return", when Uranus, moving through early Aquarius, reached its own place in the
country's birth horoscope, also making an extremely positive aspect to the national Sun. This has
reflected, in part, the culmination of European union and the fulfillment of many political and
social ideals of equality which have always been so much part of Belgium's vision of how the
world could be. Now Neptune, moving through Aquarius, will, over the next few years, also
make an extremely positive aspect to the Sun in the national horoscope. This reflects a time
when even more progress is made in social and economic reform, and a true sense of being part
of a much larger, harmoniously functioning whole can offer a sense of enormous well-being to
the country. There is little tension or conflict shown in the planetary movements coming up, with
the exception of two difficult aspects. Uranus, moving into the last part of Aquarius, will
challenge Saturn in the national chart, suggesting that the more defensive, proud, entrenched
elements in the nation's psyche are likely to be shaken up and transformed. There is also a
challenging configuration from Neptune to the Moon in the nation's horoscope. This suggests
that there is a price to be paid for the fulfillment of ideals - a need to relinquish some of the
more earthbound, prosaic qualities which have, at times, caused a resistance to change which
has proved problematic. However, this is likely to occur without great inner tension, and the
sacrifice will undoubtedly seem worthwhile, to you and most others, because of the relatively
trouble-free, tranquil, serene vision of the future which is now opening up to the Belgian people.
The national chart of Switzerland In the horoscope for Switzerland, Pluto, as it moves through Sagittarius, will reflect extremely
important shifts in the nature of the structure of government and the role the country plays in
the world. This may be reflected in an increased involvement with the European Union, which,
if it occurred, would inevitably involve major changes in many areas of Swiss life. Whether or
not you favour these changes personally, they are a reflection of a larger global trend toward
broader horizons and increased communication and interaction between nations as well as
between individuals. The ultimate results are likely to be extremely positive, although some
conflict and resistance are probably inevitable. Switzerland's Sun is placed in the versatile,
shrewd, orderly, and cautious earth sign Virgo. The dynamic energies of Neptune and Uranus
moving through socially innovative Aquarius and Pluto through visionary Sagittarius are likely
to be met initially with some anxiety and mistrust. Yet although some of the changes may seem
to fly in the face of tradition and the values of the past - for Pluto also affects that aspect of the
Swiss chart concerned with security and stability rooted in the structures of the past - it may be
that the time has arrived for renewal and a moving toward the future with optimism rather than
a sense of victimisation or oppression. And as Uranus moves through Pisces the immensely
imaginative and creative qualities of the Swiss may be expressed through new artistic channels
which are increasingly made available to a world community.
In the horoscope of the united Germany, Pluto, as it moves through Sagittarius, will express its
cleansing and transformative qualities through that area of the chart concerned with Germany's
relations with other nations - in particular its "friends", which suggests those countries with
whom Germany is linked economically and politically. Here there may be conflicts and rivalries
which, for a time, create a certain tension and conflict, possibly leading to changes in certain
laws and a need for the government to deal with emotional issues and demands on the part of
the people - issues that cannot be "legislated" out of existence. Meanwhile Neptune, planet of
dreams and disillusionment, is likely to demonstrate both its idealism and its tendency to
unrealistic expectations through pacts and partnerships. Here once again is a suggestion that
there are likely to be many complex issues that need to be resolved between Germany and its
fellow European nations throughout the time of the Millennium and in the years immediately
afterward. Although the essential core of the chart, the Sun, remains stable and unaffected,
there is likely to be considerable emotional pressure and disturbance on the popular level,
exacerbated by the fact that Uranus, planet of change and disruption, passes over Germany's
Moon and may reflect some disruption caused by popular movements. Because the birth chart
of the new Germany reflects a deep innate idealism, the time of the Millennium is likely to
require a grounding of those high ideals which impelled the unification of the country and the
strong emphasis on a united Europe. And such grounding will indeed happen - but not without
the necessity of dealing with ordinary people's emotional anxieties and grievances, and
compromising certain dreams so that they can be anchored in reality.
It is not possible to establish a date for the beginning of the Danish Kingdom, which emerged
during the 10th century and achieved the status of a great European power. The current Danish
horoscope is that of the foundation of the liberal constitution with its constitutional monarchy
and parliamentary government, which occurred in 1849 under the versatile, communicative, and
intellectually far-ranging sign of Gemini. This birth chart reflects a strong commitment to
spiritual and social ideals, a powerful work ethic, and a deep dedication to public service,
sometimes at odds with the freedom-loving and fiercely independent emotional life of the
people. The movement of Pluto through Sagittarius is already bringing about many changes in
Denmark's fundamental religious, political, and social ideals, and throughout the next decade, a
new spirit of freedom and expansion is likely to continually and increasingly challenge certain
intellectually based precepts and ideological perspectives which have dominated in the past.
Pluto also moves over that area of the horoscope concerned with roots and the past, and this
may require some real soul-searching and re-evaluation of old beliefs and attitudes that have
been taken for granted but are now past their sell-by date. The European Union may pose many
challenges for Denmark, because although Gemini is an adaptable and socially equable sign, it is
also fiercely independent and resistant to too many rules imposed from outside. Rules may be
accepted from within, but not when they are imported from elsewhere. Virgo on the Ascendant
in Denmark's horoscope, and Saturn placed in the house of relationships with other countries,
also reflect a strong need for autonomy, privacy, and self-sufficiency. Whether or not you
personally are in sympathy with such attitides, the country as a whole is inclined to fiercely resist
interference from other countries, and in a time when "global" is the operative word, this
emphasises the caution with which present political change is likely to be met. The flexibility,
ingenuity, and generosity of spirit reflected in this chart guarantee, however, that such changes
will ultimately be acceptable and prove positive and creative on all levels of Danish life.
Spain's long and fascinating history can be traced back to the Kingdom of the Visigoths, and the
creation of the nation itself was effected in 1479 with the marriage of Prince Ferdinand of
Aragon and Princess Isabella of Castille. However, the horoscope which is generally used for
modern Spain is based on the inauguration of King Juan Carlos on 22 November 1975, when the
Sun was in the deep, passionate, transformative sign of Scorpio. This national horoscope, with
Aquarius on the Ascendant, portrays a nation full of creative contradictions: liberal and free-
thinking yet rooted in a deeply traditional past and in the mystery of the land itself; progressive
and innovative in its vision of the future yet, with Saturn placed in the house of relationships,
wary of interference from fellow nations. Neptune's movement through Aquarius, passing over
Spain's Ascendant, along with Pluto in Sagittarius moving across Neptune in the nation's
horoscope, is likely to stir up some of these contradictions, especially the issue of just how close
a bond Spain really wants and needs with its fellow European states. Idealism may collide with a
growing realism about human limits, and natural tolerance and generosity may vie with national
pride and a need to retain an independent identity. Some disillusionment over disappointed
political, social, and economic ideals may create confusion around Spain's role in Europe and in
the world, although this confusion is not likely to be expressed through serious unrest. However,
the tension generated by these transits of Neptune and Pluto over the next few years gradually
gives way to the exciting movement of Uranus through Pisces, making benign aspects to the Sun
and Mercury in the national horoscope. This seems to reflect a kind of Renaissance, a freeing of
intellectual and artistic energy and a renewed pride in the nation's ability to make her mark on
the world. It is likely that you, along with anyone else deeply concerned with Spain's future, will
find that this creative renewal is well worth waiting for.
France has many birth charts, each reflecting the dynamic political and social changes which
have occurred in this country over the centuries. The current horoscope for France is that of the
Fifth Republic, born in 1958 under the artistic, intellectually astute, and civilised sign of Libra.
The movement of Uranus and Neptune through the sign of Aquarius promises many artistic and
scientific breakthroughs which express the great creativity of this country. The harmonious
aspects of both these planets may also provide a channel through which the spirit of service to
others - a strong factor in this horoscope - can be employed in positive and inspirational ways. It
would seem that involvement in the European Union promises to be a dynamic, creative, and,
with occasional exceptions, harmonious expression of France's natural need to form alliances
with other countries, reflected by the Sun and Venus in Libra. Pluto, moving through Sagittarius,
will bring its slow but inexorable transformation to the sphere of law, religion, and social
ideology, and this promises to break down many entrenched prejudices and belief-systems which
have caused frustration to many people in the past. Pluto moving through fiery, free-thinking
Sagittarius, passing over the nation's natal Saturn, may raise the important issue of tolerance -
religious, social, and political - and bring into the open those areas where rigidity of thinking has
created blocks for both the French themselves and the other countries with whom they are
involved. However, these challenges are likely to be met, in the main, with enthusiasm rather
than resistance, and the combined picture of the movements of all three outer planets in the
French horoscope is primarily positive, inspiring, and conducive to a real creative renaissance
over the next decade. Whether or not you are able to take advantage of this time of inspiration
depends on you.
In October 1989 a new Hungary was born, free of the Soviet yoke. The new democratic nation
emerged under the intense, passionate, tenacious sign of Scorpio. Over the next few years the
movements of the outer planets in this chart are low-key but benign, giving Hungary a chance to
find her feet and define her values and identity as a nation. Pluto, moving through Sagittarius,
will move over the nation's Venus in the area of the chart concerned with relations with fellow
nations, and this suggests that Hungary's efforts to enter and benefit from the European Union
will, sooner or later, meet with success. Uranus, moving through Aquarius in the area of the
chart concerned with material foundations and stability, will create a challenging aspect to the
nation's Moon in proud, self-expressive Leo, suggesting that certain necessary adjustments will
have to be made regarding the economic and political structures on which Hungary's future is
built. The Moon in Leo describes an inherent sense of individuality which is by nature opposed
to too great a dominance by any central government or party. These adjustments may create
some dissatisfaction and internal friction for a time, but as this aspect moves off, Uranus,
shifting into the sign of Pisces, will then make many benign aspects to the nation's chart,
suggesting that ultimately this strong, proud, determined and passionate nation, with a thousand
years of history behind it, will regain its rightful place in Europe.
The republic of Italy was born in 1946 under the versatile, communicative sign of Gemini. Pluto,
as it moves through Sagittarius, presents major challenges to this country's political, financial,
and social structures, offering the possibility of a total transformation of outlook with greater
stability and the fulfilment of many cherished social ideals. However, it would seem that this
potential, because of Pluto's delving quality, can only be achieved if there is greater transparency
and openness on the part of both government and people. Italy's birth chart reflects the double-
edged gift of an intense and enormously creative individuality coupled with a propensity to
shroud many things from prying eyes. It is this inclination toward secrecy, reflected in many
areas of Italian life and government, which may be challenged by Pluto, and old sores and
grievances inherited from the past may need to be brought into the open and re-evaluated so
that the innate optimism, idealism and generosity expressed by the fine aspect between the Sun
and Jupiter in this birth chart can be anchored in positive changes which benefit everyone.
Uranus, also a harbinger of change and progress, is crossing the area of Italy's chart which
reflects its past, and this too suggests that many issues - both religious and social - need to be
finally confronted and transformed. Italy's Scorpio Moon, hidden away in the area of the chart
concerned with ancestral inheritance, suggests that old wounds linger for a long time, and so
does the people's mistrust of authority, whether religious or political. The cleansing and
inspirational energies of both Pluto and Uranus could provide the possibility for the healing of
these wounds. Whether or not you are personally in sympathy with the kinds of changes now on
the horizon, this is one of the countries most powerfully affected by important planetary
movements in the next decade, and the potential for positive change and the expression of each
individual citizen's creative gifts is enormous.
The national chart of Luxembourg Luxembourg became an independent state in 1839, when the Sun was in the innovative, dynamic
fire sign of Aries. Born with the Sun and Pluto together, this small state, despite its fiery heart,
has always maintained a low profile, but the horoscope describes a nation which wields
considerable power and influence behind the scenes. The movements of the outer planets
through this chart over the next few years are quiet and benign. But two very important
planetary cycles complete themselves in the horoscope of Luxembourg: Uranus returns to its
natal place in Pisces, and Neptune returns to its place in Aquarius. This suggests that
Luxembourg has completed a full cycle in its development, and will enter the new century ready
to begin an entirely new phase in its life. Neptune moving through Aquarius, coming back to
where it was placed when the nation was born, emphasises Luxembourg's openness to
involvement with, and service to, a global culture and economy, for this nation is particularly
attuned to the Aquarian world-view which is increasingly changing our outlook on life. Uranus
moving through Pisces, also coming back to where it was placed at Luxembourg's birth and
forming a challenging aspect to Saturn, activates a tension between old and new, traditional and
innovative, conservative and liberal, which is inherent in this horoscope, suggesting that conflict-
particularly in religious and legal spheres - can lead to new creative thinking which can ensure
Luxembourg's continuing influence as a "power behind the throne" in Europe.
The national chart of the Netherlands The formal foundation of the modern Netherlands occurred in 1581, under the proud and
independent sign of Leo. The planet Pluto, as it moves through Sagittarius, both emphasises and
transforms this strong, independent and self-expressive core, and although obvious changes will
be necessary through European unification it seems that the Netherlands will experience great
benefits and a strengthening and validation of her national identity and creative contribution.
This may also be felt economically, as Pluto moves through the part of the birth chart concerned
with national resources and wealth, suggesting that material as well as creative benefits are likely
to enhance a sense of well-being over the next few years. Meanwhile, Uranus, planet of change
and disruption, comes back to its place in the birth chart - a full 84-year cycle - and, despite
invoking a certain resistance and conservatism, reflects a willingness to embrace the sense of a
larger human family and all the changes this is likely to imply on the domestic level. There is a
curious paradox in the birth chart of the Netherlands: Saturn and Uranus both placed in
Aquarius in the sphere concerned with roots suggest that there is a deep inherent conflict which
impels the nation first toward isolation, then toward a more global consciousness. This
fundamental tension is likely to be aggravated as Uranus and also Neptune move through
Aquarius, but ultimately the innate willingness on the part of this nation to embrace new and
challenging ideas - one of the most attractive dimensions of the country's history - will transform
any reactionary elements and truly usher in a new age.
The national chart of the United Kingdom In the horoscope for the United Kingdom, Pluto, as it moves through Sagittarius, will reflect
extremely important shifts in attitudes toward education, communication, and the role of the
media. Some of these changes may threaten the more rigid dimensions of the "class" system
which is historically such an important aspect of the nation's social history. The increasing
availability of knowledge of all kinds through new technology may ultimately mean a more
global consciousness and a greater sense of belonging to a larger human community.
Accompanying these changes, hotly debated moral issues around the role of the media and the
nature of press and television coverage may mean profound changes in how the British as a
nation view the deeper meaning of individual privacy, individual responsibility, and the media in
the role of educator. Standards may change and become more universal. The gently
transformative quality of Neptune in Aquarius may also play its part in a continuing shift in the
nation's attitude toward its royalty and its aristocracy. In addition, the dynamic energy of
Uranus in Aquarius, moving through the sphere of the nation's horoscope concerned with
creativity and the arts, may reflect a new creative Renaissance, with a corresponding breaking
down of those structures which in the past might have limited the capacity of both individuals
and groups to find a receptive audience for innovative creative work. Whether or not you favour
these changes personally, it would seem that a time has arrived when an opening of heart and
mind bring not only anxiety to those identified with a more inward-looking world-view, but
exciting new challenges to all those willing to embrace a broader universe.
The national chart of Australia There are many charts for various stages in the development of Australia, beginning with
Captain Cook's voyage in the 18th century. However, the birth of modern Australia, with its
federal system, occurred in 1901, when both the Sun and Saturn were together in the tenacious,
goal-orientated, earthy sign of Capricorn. Although some people might imagine that Australia is
represented entirely by Dame Edna and Crocodile Dundee, the tough, enduring, determined
quality of this horoscope, enriched by far-ranging, innovative thinking and enormous creative
power, suggests an altogether different and more potent entity. The emphasis in Australia's
birth chart is in those spheres connected with philosophy and the deeper levels of existence, and
this is reflected in the work of the great novelist Patrick White as well as a thriving, sophisticated
astrological community and a film industry whose creative versatility often puts Hollywood to
shame. Pluto, moving over the four planets placed in Sagittarius in Australia's chart, is likely to
expand and enrich the creative potential of the country, as well as bringing to the boil that
ferociously independent spirit which seeks complete freedom from its British past. It is likely
that over the next few years Australia will indeed make its own way in the world as a fully
independent nation state. Despite a deep love of material stability and of the land itself,
reflected by the nation's Moon in Taurus, Pluto's powerful transits are likely to be reflected in
some necessary upheaval and change in political and economic structures as well as in a deep re-
evaluation of the relationship Australians have with their native Aboriginal population. The next
few years are likely to be exciting, turbulent, productive times which release great creative
potential and demand the expression of a new and more potent identity to the outside world.
The Dominion of Canada came into existence in July 1867, under the sensitive, introverted, and
imaginative sign of Cancer. Although Canadian sovereignty was not officially declared until
1982, Canada already possessed full effective independence from the time that the Dominion
was declared as an entity. Born with the Sun together with Uranus in that area of the horoscope
concerned with roots, ancestry, and the mystery of the land itself, this indrawn, quietly
unconventional and essentially visionary nation does not place all its wares in the shop window.
Those attempting to penetrate beneath the surface - perhaps even Canadians themselves! - may
find it difficult to grasp the heart of this country's deepest dreams and aspirations, which are
always kept protected from interference from the outside. The movements of the outer planets
through this chart over the next few years are quiet and largely benign; it is unlikely that any
major changes will occur in the essential structure of the nation for a long time. But Pluto,
moving through Sagittarius and creating tension in the sector of the birth chart concerned with
wealth and resources, suggests that Canada may need to rethink her role economically, placing
less emphasis on those products and values which have, in the past, proven successful, and
finding new values and resources with which to compete on the world's stage. This may lie in the
area of education and the arts, both of which are strongly emphasised in the birth chart - a
powerful emphasis on learning, exploration, and aesthetics is reflected here and this may
gradually come to the fore as other emphases prove less viable. In the course of time, when
Pluto eventually enters Capricorn and challenges the Sun in Canada's birth chart, certain
internal political dilemmas may finally come to a head and demand resolution. In the meantime,
this nation has, perhaps, not yet woken up to its full creative and cultural potential. It is likely
that over the next few years this is where the energy will flow in the national psyche. Whether or
not you take advantage of this trend, and participate in what could prove a real cultural
renaissance, is up to you.
The national chart of Malaysia The federation of Malaysia was formed in 1963, under the conscientious, subtle and ingenious sign of Virgo. Beneath the apparently adaptable surface, there is a powerful innate drive in this horoscope toward constant self-renewal and transformation. Malaysia has never been what she appears to be in the outer world. Over the next few years this nation is likely to experience profound internal changes, particularly in regard to her sense of roots and affiliations with neighbouring countries. A strong sense of independence and self-assertion, arising from within, is likely to inaugurate
major political and economic changes, reflecting the transit of Pluto forming strong aspects to
the country's Sun placed in the house of roots and origins. In addition, the revolutionary
qualities of Uranus, passing through Aquarius and moving over the point in Malaysia's
horoscope which describes its image and role in the outer world, suggests that many changes
may occur in the structure of government which create a freer, more equal society. The innate
aspiration toward free thinking and an open, tolerant, friendly interchange with the world may
be expressed in important social reforms and a renovation of attitudes and laws regarding work,
employment, and the relationship between the people and the government. This could be an
exciting, dynamic, and sometimes unstable time for Malaysia as the very basis on which the
country was formed, and its innate, instinctive style of government, are subjected to Pluto's
transformative energies. Whether or not you are personally in accord with the changes
described, this is, for Malaysia, truly the beginning of a new era.
The national chart of Paraguay The independent nation of Paraguay was inaugurated in 1811, under the steady, subtly powerful, earthy sign of Taurus. There are many innate contradictions in this quietly forceful national horoscope which reflect inner tensions and conflicts between a fundamental earthiness and conservative love of the land and tradition, and a progressive, forward-looking spirit which strives toward social and intellectual freedom. Over the next few years, Uranus, moving through Aquarius, passes over the nation's Sun,
activating Paraguay's revolutionary spirit and challenging many entrenched attitudes from the
past. Meanwhile, Pluto, moving through Sagittarius, passes over three important planets in this
natal horoscope which are related to the style of government and the nation's image in the outer
world, suggesting that major changes are on the way which may result in a more open,
democratic style and some radical shifts in political and economic policy. This time is likely to
prove exciting, sometimes unstable, and ultimately highly positive for Paraguay as she moves
slowly but surely toward an integration of the disparate elements in the national chart,
promising a future which honours the earthy base on which the country is built but also
encompasses a greater transparency and equality on all levels of society. Whether or not you are
personally in accord with these changes, they describe a major shift which aligns Paraguay more
closely with the global Aquarian ideals of the future.
The national chart of the United States In the horoscope of the United States, Pluto, as it moves through Sagittarius, is crossing the Ascendant of the chart, reflecting a profound transformation on many levels. This aspect has never occurred before in America's history, and therefore it is of the greatest importance. Most likely to be affected is the country's own image of itself, reflected not only in how America presents itself to other nations, but in the myths, dreams, ideals and social expectations which are expressed at home. The independent, freedom-loving, expansive, truth-seeking qualities of Sagittarius are evident in the American myth, style, and self-image, and it is this particular image which is likely to be transformed over the time of the Millennium and afterward. There may be some loss of naivety, and some serious questioning of previously held moral and religious assumptions; but at the same time there is also likely to be an increased desire to understand human motivation, and a strong wish to eradicate all those negative internal influences which thwart human rights and dampen hope. This could mean an increase of religious intensity in some quarters. Religious, legal and moral issues are likely to be the source of many conflicts and many creative resolutions over this time. The long transit of Pluto is likely to be reflected in much soul-searching and moral and religious questioning, some of it perhaps excessive, but all of it underpinned by a profound collective need to build sounder spiritual and ethical foundations. The subtle influence of Neptune moving through Aquarius could help this process to achieve a creative result because it may remind Americans of their unity with other peoples and other nations, not least through shared material and financial resources; and this could help to offset any intolerance set in motion by Pluto's intense quest for truth. Likewise Uranus in Aquarius and Pisces, passing over the Moon in the American chart, may awaken public consciousness of the wider world, and stimulate a desire for greater tolerance and humanitarian concern as well as inspiring new technological and scientific discoveries. (Data used: 4 July 1776, 4.50 pm LMT, Philadelphia, PA; this is the so-called "Sibly chart", which was originally published in 1787. It is based, in part, on eyewitness accounts of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There is another chart commonly used for the USA, which gives Gemini on the Ascendant, but there is no historical evidence to support this horoscope.) The national chart of South Africa South Africa has a long and turbulent history and many critical "births", beginning with the first
European settlement at Table Bay in 1652. The Union of South Africa occurred on 31 May
1910, but this "incarnation" of the nation was not yet truly independent, nor did it reflect the will
of the majority of its people. On 27 April 1994, under a powerful opposition between the Sun in
earthy, tenacious Taurus and Jupiter in intense, passionate Scorpio, the new multi-racial
constitution came into effect, promising an end to nearly four centuries of suffering, violence,
inequality, and exploitation. This birth horoscope, with its conjunction of the Moon and Pluto in
Scorpio, subtly portrays the dark inheritance of the past, which at the same time contains
enormous possibilities for transformation and renewal. For some time the transits of Uranus
and Neptune, making difficult aspects to these planets placed in Taurus and Scorpio in the
national chart, have described a situation of both extreme tension and enormous creative
possibilities. Pluto, moving through Sagittarius and making challenging aspects to the national
Saturn (the entrenched, defensive elements within the country) and the national Mars (the
aggressive and progressive energies within the national psyche), reflects a life-or-death struggle
and a sometimes violent release of the poisons of the past. This astrological picture defines what
has been, in effect, a long labour and a difficult, dangerous birth, and the tensions symbolised by
these aspects are likely to continue on political, social and economic levels for some time.
However, over the next few years Uranus, moving into the inclusive and visionary sign of Pisces,
makes extremely positive aspects to all these planets, suggesting that tolerance, understanding,
and a truly democratic vision of the future will ultimately ensure a harmonising of conflicting
elements and a willingness to relinquish the bitterness of the past. Whatever your personal views
on the present tension in South Africa, this nation, both old and new at the same time, has a
phoenix-like capacity to rise triumphantly from the ashes of its long turmoil.
