Others did say it before me, and I really do agree: This is the absolutely best web service I have found on the net! All these small cities!
I arrived to this site 5 minutes ago, and haven't learned how to find the charts from earlier times than the present, but I will.
Who pays you for all this time you must have spended in doing this?

I am having some difficulty with the information I received regarding my birth chart. I was born August 26, 1961 * 5:02 PM in Gary, IN. I have had my chart done before and was told my ascendent sign is Leo which makes a lot of sense. When I did it through your service, my ascendent sign is Capricorn. The characteristics attributed to Capricorn are so far from my personality it's as if I have an evil twin. What could be the problem?
Dorna Robinson [ *hotmail.com ]
Annandale, VA, USA --- Tuesday, October 28, 1997 at 22:20 Swiss time
Alois adds:
Dear Dorna,
the problem is that the person who told you about Leo was totally wrong.
Your Ascendant is Capricorn. Your Sun sign is Virgo. There is no room
for another opinion in this matter.
Simple common sense can already show you. The Sun was in Virgo, is was
5.02 in the afternoon late in August. In which direction on the sky will
the Sun have been? It will be in the west, south west at this time of the
day. Now Leo is immediately the neighbouring sign to Virgo, to the right
of it when you look towards the Sun. Leo will be in a western direction
on the sky.
The Ascendant however is the sign which rises in the east at a given moment.
If Leo is in the west, it cannot be rising. The rising sign must be
a sign more or less on the other side of the zodiac, and happens to be
Capricorn.
Thank you for your great service!!! My aunt recommended that I visit your site, as I was born in Berlin Germany, making it more difficult to calculate my ascendant, which incidently keeps coming up as 0 Virgo. This puzzles me, since I have strong outward Leo tendencies (I am an actress, love clothes, people, can be termperamental and emotional, etc.) and don't relate to Virgo ascendent characteristics. I have had 1 or 2 astrologers say I have a Leo ascendent, but not recently.
My mother insists I was born somewhere between 1:50AM-2:30AM., Oct. 14, 1962 in Berlin, Ger. Do you have any insight as to why I am so uncomfortable with my ascendent?
Thanks again for this terrific service, I will visit you often. The adopted woman who wrote in should consider therapy throgh some sort of public venue, I feel very sorry for her view on life.
Pamela Langley [ A*aol.com ]
Temecula, USA --- Monday, October 27, 1997 at 19:05 Swiss time
Alois adds: Dear Pamela, only if you go back in birth time to 1.45 you would
get a Leo ascendant.
The most important step for you is to write
to the birth registry in Berlin for your registered birth time. If your
parents where part of an US army installation in Berlin, I do not know whether
your birth was registered in the normal civilian German birth registries. But
in any other case you will be registered. It would be good to know which
district of Berlin your parents lived in, because the public administration
is organized by city disctricts within West Berlin. You need to write
to the Standesamt, Geburtenregister (citizen administration, birth registry)
and ask for a copy of your birth registry information including time of birth
(German: Auszug aus dem Geburtenregister mit Uhrzeit). It will cost about
5 - 10 Deutsche Mark. If you add a 5 USD bill with your request, it will
be fulfilled.
To make it simpler, you may ask a good friend of mine, Mona Riegger, who
runs the Astrologie-Zentrum Berlin. She has a lot of experience
with getting information from the registries. I send Mona a copy of this
answer, so that she knows already about the problem, and you should mail
her directly at mona.*t-online.de
You should include your full name, parents names, address of the parents
at time of birth and name of the hospital where you where born.
There are strict data privacy laws in Germany so it depends on the mood
and understanding of the officials whether they will give the information
to a third party like Mona. If they don't, you will at least learn from her
where you have to write to exactly, and how much it costs.
Only after you have verified your birth time from the official registry it
will make sense to dicuss your chart.
This is the most helpful site I have wandered onto. Thank you for all of the information that you are making available. I will tell my friends about this site.
Thanks again!!!

You obviously bought a list somewhere to get my e mail address to send this. As it is for my daughters birthdate not mine. I was adopted and the U.S. government refuses to allow me to even have my adoption records to find out which birthdate they have is true, there are so many lies surrounding "bought" children in this country. Then you probably ask a time and where, wouldn't it be nice to know. Even who your REAL parents are. Astrology is only for the lucky people who DO know. So adoption counts me out of this too. What a life. And people who are adopted are supposed to be so fortunate, yeah right. I don't think so.
I guess what you are doing is good, people seem to think so if the comments are real. But I see that you then say the people have to pay for a report, guess that tells what that chart means, so its just all another racket to get money. The god and ruler of this world or else you die. What a life isn't it. All about money for those that have it. To me this is just like the whole god game I don't believe in anything or anyone, lifes a bitch and then you die. Guess you people have that thing called money to be happy along the way. Don't know what to do with this chart except delete it. Know this letter won't make your archives, it is not perky enough but it is my reality. Bye

The sign Leo begins, correct me if I'm wrong, on the 23rd of July. The "old Astrologists" charts show this, why has it changed? I do not fit the sign of Cancer. Leo is my sign. Please comment. Alois adds:
You are wrong. The change of the Sun from Cancer into Leo can happen on the
22nd or 23rd, at some time of the day. This time changes from year to year.
The change does not happen at midnight (and it is not midnight at the same
time all around the world).
In 1971, the Sun entered Leo at 12:15 pm Universal Time on 23 July.
Where you where born the timezone was Eastern daylight time. Only after
8.15 am EDT the Sun was in Leo. As you are born before, you are a Cancer.
I am sorry for you, would-be Leo. At least your Moon is on Leo, so not all is
lost.
Thank you for your great service. I love the charts! In one of the letters you received you explained what M, N, A and D meant. Could you explain what Ang, Suc, Cad, Learn and Share stand for, please?
Thanks to your charts I discovered that my ascendent is Sagittarius, which is my baby's sun sign. Furthermore, my partner and I share the same sun sign of Pisces, whereas my partner and our son have the same ascendant of Libra. Are these factors significant in terms of our relationships with one another? Thanks

Alois adds: I have chosen to remove the 'Learn - Share' counting because it
is not well known.
I also have replaced the M N A D labels with more intuitive ones.
Ang counts the planets in angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10)
Suc counts the planets in intermediate houses (2, 5, 8, 11)
Cad counts the planets in cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12)
I feel that your chart is the most accurate that i have come across online. However, on other services, I have seen some variation which causes the changing of my ascending sign. Being born 6-16-74 * 10:45am in Columbus, OH, is my ascending sign Leo or Virgo, and why is there such a discrepancy in my different charts, shouldn't it always be the same, constant result? Also, could you recommend a guide, or book for interpreting my own chart? Thank you, and I love the free service!

You are born at 10.45 Eastern Daylight Time and this gives 22 degrees Leo

Thank you so much for your chart service. I am new to astrology and find this a nice service. I have a question: If I am trying to find where my planets and houses are located now rather than at my birth do I use my birth town or the town I live in now?
Thank you for your help.
Marie Harrup [ *centuryinter.net ]
Maxwell, USA --- Monday, October 20, 1997 at 02:47 Swiss time
Alois adds:
Your question is not so clear. There are various techniques:
a) The actual position of the planets now is not a chart which is personal
for you but for everybody the same, a 'mundane' chart.
b) A transit chart: positions of the actual planets in relation to your birth
chart. There you use the houses of the birth chart.
c) A progressed birth chart, derived with the rule 'one astronomical day
after birth equals one year of life'. This is done with the birth town.
d) A relocation chart: use the date and (Universal) time of birth but the
town where you live. This is a chart 'as if you where born somehwere else'.
I'm very pleased with your service. Is there a catch to its being free?
I've always cast my charts by hand rather than wait a week for an unreadable computer printout that I must copy over for clients and myself anyway. But I can live with copying over when I can get my hands on a chart in about two minutes.
In the information on distribution of planets around the chart, what do these initials represent? M, N, A, D
Thanks again, from another Virgo.
Trudi Hahn [ *gw.startribune.com ]
Minneapolis, USA --- Sunday, October 19, 1997 at 04:26 Swiss time
Alois adds: there is no catch - it is a service to the astrological community.
Astrodienst has been a successful company since 18 years, I love the Internet
and like to share. Maybe my Pisces Sun comes into it as well.
Of course we
love it when some vistors who come for the free chart service also develop
an interest in our excellent reports (which are too valuable to be free).
We get a good number of report orders from this.
There are some obscure features in Walter Pullen's Astrolog
program. The M,N,A,D values are counts of the planets (incl. node) in the hemispheres of the chart.
M = MC's hemisphere = above horizon
N = Nadir's hemisphere = below horizon
A = Ascendant's hemisphere = east half
D = Descendant's hemisphere = west half
Alois: I can never thank you enough!!! You have ended over 10 years of confusion. Thank you so much for your quick reply to my oh-so-self-absorbed question. Now I can happily tell people my correct Sun & Ascendant signs (very important for a Virgo to be correct).
I'll be using your system to work out all of my family & friends'charts now.
Cheers,
Angela

Only in 1918, 1919, 1942 and then from 1967 on every year was Daylight
Savings time in this part of Ohio.
What a fabulous site!! Well done! Exactly what I've been hunting for..... I have a couple of questions:
DOB: 6:45pm 23rd August, 1969 Darwin, Australia
I have been voraciously reading every astrology book I could get my hands on, but have had conflicting information on my ascendant sign (a professional astrologer: Aquarius, various books (printed in UK/US, but worked with using Aussie time differences): Libra, Scorpio, and finally your chart, and a CD-Rom astrology software package: Pisces. Why is it that I seem to be able to work out everybody else's chart, and not my own??
My other query is regarding my sun sign. I am on the cusp of Leo/Virgo. I've been told I'm a Virgo by a couple of minutes, so why do so many people consider me to be Leonine when I have no other Leo in my chart? Could it be that I am actually a Leo? Or should I just consider myself a Virgo with a slightly different "flavour"?
Please, please, please put me out of my misery (I have spent years of trudging from one opinion to another).
I think your page is fantastic, by the way. Thank you eternally.

Dear Angela
The timezone is 9h30 east of Greenewich, the GMT/UT 9.15 am, same
date. Every astrologer should be capable of computing the correct 1° Pisces
Ascendant. You have to go back to 18:38 to get Aquarius Ascendant. You got it
wrong from the do-it-yourself books because they probably contained no
Ascendant table for southern latitudes, or gave wrong instructions.
To get the Sun into Leo you would have to adjust your time to 17:13 (5:13 pm).
If you want to be Leo, you might look into Sidereal Astrology (Hindu
Astrology) which uses a different Zodiac. This gives you a 5° Leo Sun!
You can check the Sidereal chart on our server, in the list 'Select among
various chart types'. Sidereal astrology is not my personal favorite, but
Australia is closer to the part of the world where it is practised, so who
knows...

Firstly I would like to thank you in this age of patents and copyrights for your wonderful free chart service. It is easy to use and appears to be very thorough and surprisingly fast. So thank you! Now my question is about the historical evolution of timezones in the UK. From using your chart service it appears to me that post 1971 the UK has operated as it does presently with local time being the same as GMT in the winter months and 1 hour greater than GMT in the Summer months. However in 1971 and earlier it appears that the UK local time was 1 hour FORWARD of GMT for the whole year (at least from Februrary to November). I base this conclusion on creating a number of charts using your free service. I have tried unsuccessfully to check whether this pattern of time zones is historically accurate and so turn to you for confirmation and maybe a short explanation of what went on in 1971 (and on exactly what date).
Before I sign off I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Liz Greene and Alois Treindl on their superlative Psychological Horoscopes. I find them very accurate and insightful - the best on the market that I know of!

Dear David
You can rely on our timezone database.
The best argument I can give you: We have two licensees of Astro*Intelligence
reports in the UK, Equinox in London and the Midheaven Bookshop in London.
Both operate with our software, which contains a copy of the same timezone
atlas we present on the Web.
We would have had feedback many years ago if our timezone database was
wrong! They have run and sold many thousands of reports for people born
in the UK in this period.
By the way, the time when Britain tried Central European time was short, only
from 1968 to 1971.
i'm very interest

Hello...I had to check my chart over and over again because for years about three astrologers have told me that my Ascendant was in Scorpio but recently two people tried to give me an interpretation using this service....and it is really confusing me! Now..I am told that my Ascendant is in two different signs..none of which is Scorpio..Can you see my dilemma? After many years of believing that I had Scorpio Rising, I still cannot identify with the other suggested signs..Sagittarius and Gemini..So..I would like to know where I can find the most accurate chart ..once and for all! I hope you can help me with this dilemma..Thank you.
By the way..I have Astrology For LOvers by Liz Greene and thought it was marvelous!

You have to give correct birth data, and the chart will be correct.
I have computed (through Astrodienst, whose programs I wrote) close to
one million of correct charts in my life. I do not understand where there
should be ambiguity in the matter. Send me your data by email, and I will
run the chart personally.
Welche Bedeutung haben in der Horoskopgrafik
die unteren rechten Abkuerzungen?
z.B. M:9, N:3, A:7, D:5
Ang:5, Suc:5, Cad:2
Learn:2, Share:10
Danke!

I would like to order lots of reports from you, but I do not feel it's safe to put my credit card number on the internet. It's too bad there isn't a way we could pay by check before receiving the reports.

Alois adds:
We feel that too much is made of the very small risks. There are so many
other people in the world with access to your credit card number - any shop
or restaurant where you ever used it.
However, on our order form you can put the entry 'by fax' into
the credit card number field. Our software will warn about invalid
card number but accept the order anyway.
Then please fax your credit card details to us at +41-1-391 7574.
Faxing is perfectly safe! Thank you!

You have an error for February 18, 1974 in Philadelphia, PA. The chart results are in terms of daylight savings, which as far as I know is not in effect anywhere in the winter!
Kristin Carlson
--- Friday, October 3, 1997 at 17:34 Swiss time
Alois adds: Our data are right.
Winter 1973/74 was special. It was the time of the oil crisis where many
countries were afraid of being cut off from oil sources. Emergency measures
of all kinds were introduced, in some parts of the US daylight savings time
was started on January 6th 1974, instead of the usual late April date.
As always I suggest: check your local newspaper archives for the days around
January 6th; it should be mentioned in the daily papers.
Thank you for taking the hassle out of time zones, latitudes, and longitudes! This is an excellent site. However, I'd love to see numbers on the charts and an aspect grid.
Holly [ HD*aol.com ]
Dallas, TX USA --- Friday, October 3, 1997 at 15:30 Swiss time
Alois adds: use the menu 'Various chart types' at the bottom of the timezone
page. There is a choice to see the aspect grid. In ASTROLOG, Walter Pullen's
program which we use, is no graphics with both, chart wheel and aspect grid
on one display.
A new webserver by Astrodienst:
We installed an hour ago a new machine at
Astrodienst as the web server. This machine (A HP 735/125 running HP-Unix) is about three times as fast as the previous machine. Now the free charts come up in 1.5 seconds if the server is not too busy.

I thought that you only had one house in each sign, but at the chart there is two or three houses in some signs. Is that right?
Hanna
, Sweden --- Friday, October 3, 1997 at 08:50 Swiss time
Alois adds: With unequal house systems like Placidus or Koch, the houses do
not measure 30 degrees. Particularily in high latitudes like Sweden it happens
frequently that a house is over 60 degrees. With equal house systems this is
different, of course, but then the MC does not coincide with the 10th house.
First I really like the chart. And your atlas is the best. Thank you. What do the words and numbers at the bottom like Ang: 8, Cad: 3 stand for?

Can you please explain how the time zones in Astrodienst work? I get very confused dealing with DST/CST and would appreciate any insights you have. I noticed that Greenwich, UK is Zone h1e. Is there a Zone 0? I am in Zone h5w. That means 6 hours difference, no? How does Astrodienst determine if DST or CST was/is in effect? What is the real significance of being 'x' hours from Greenwich?
Carrie Akins [ *baxter.com ]
Waukegan, IL, U.S.A. --- Wednesday, October 1, 1997 at 21:39 Swiss time
Alois adds:
First you should read all the information on the timezone page, and click
on the map-image to get the help page.
Greenwich, UK does currently have daylight savings time (until last Sunday in
October), so its time zone is 1 hour east (h1e) as it should.
There is nothing 'special Astrodienst', our databse does all the work with
timezones. You enter civil birth time, and the computer does the rest.
It knows about timezones and daylight saving times, you need not do anything.
Because of your service I learned something today that
I wanted to know... Thanks for helping me to grow, and I
promise to return in kind to the world as I find it becoming in me and thee. Peace.
