I want to know why it doesn't appear any aspects of Pluto to my natal chart.
Iknow Pluto is near to cross my ascendant and I think it must be something
relevant. Would you mind telling me something about this?
Thanks!

Dear Astrodienst:
Congratulations on your 20 year mark. You have my warm regards for sharing

Sowohl

You list the time zone of Denver, Colorado
as 6h west of Greenwich. On the other hand,
the time zone of my hometown Berkeley is 8h
west of Greenwich (which I'm pretty sure is
correct). I know, and it is consistent with the
longitude, that Denver is only one time zone
east of Berkeley. I have seen 7h west as the
time zone for Denver, Colorado in other places,
and I think that is correct.

Alois adds: Many towns and states have a complex timezone history, i.e.
have changed association to timezones in the past, in irregular manners.
In addition, towns, counties, states and countries have sometimes
chosen to adopt or drop daylight saving time, often also at irregalar dates.
You can certainly not draw any conclusion from current rules for times
in the past, unless you have researched the matter in all competence and
details.
During 'daylight saving time' the timezone of California, for example, is
not 8h west of Greenwich but only 7h west of Greenwich.
Denver CO is on Mountain Time (7h west of Greenwich) normally, except
during daylight saving time (like now), when it is on 6h. There have been years in the past when it was on
6h, for several years.
I recommend you leave those matters to the experts, i.e. people like us at
Astrodienst. If you use our free online service, and do not change the
timezone setting to 'manual' but leave it on 'automatic' you will have very
reliable results.
According to Astrodienst, my ascendant is Virgo. However, for the past 20
years, I thought my ascendant was Libra! This is because I received a natal
horoscope reading about 20 years ago from the American Astrological
Association, which included my natal descendant at 10 degrees 44 min. of
Libra. Also, according to the chart in the book, Write Your Own Horoscope,
by Joseph F. Goodavage (1979, Signet), my ascendant is Libra. Please explain
how this discrepancy could have happened. My birthdate is May 22, 1958. I
was born in Brooklyn, NY. The time of my birth is 2:46 p.m. Please explain
to me how Astodienst chose Virgo instead of Libra for my ascendant. Perhaps
you do not use the same ascendant time approximations as Mr. Goodavage.
According to the Goodavage time charts, my birth date of May 22 is closer to
the chart for May 15 than for the June 1 chart. In the May 15 chart, my
birth time of 2:46 is much closer to 3:30 p.m., which is Libra, than it is to
1:05 p.m., which is Virgo. Mr. Goodavage also explained that the ascendants
in his charts are most accurate at 40 degrees N. Latitude, but are valid for
anyone born between 25 and 55 degrees N. Latitude, which covers all of the
U.S. I would very much appreciate your response because, for the past 20
years, I always thought that my ascendant was Libra, which, I'm sure you will
agree, is very different than Virgo. Thank you very much for your reply.
Sincerely, Marianne Abene

Alois adds: there are only two kinds of mathematical/astronomical calculations: correct and incorrect ones. Those by Astrodienst are correct.
The Ascendant is the degree of the ecliptic rising in the east at a given time and location. It is a fact of nature and leaves no room for opinion. Astrodienst knows how to compute horoscopes - we are the masters in that field, which
most others have chosen to follow.
It is certainly
hard to give up an old believe system which is based on false assumptions.
Many people in your position have decided to stick with their old beliefs.
The choice is totally yours. There is nothing to discuss with us about it, really. We can only give you the facts.

Alois adds: Thanks, you are welcome.
Please let me tell you that it is cheaper to buy a printed ephemeris
in a bookshop than printing your own from a free website.
For example, the American Ephemeris for 1900-2000 sells for $22 in bookshops.
To print the whole century from our free online ephemeris, you need 6 pages per year, or 600 pages in total. You can hardly do this for less than 6 cents
per page on your own printer, counting paper and ink. This takes you back by
$36 just to print the 600 pages. Then you have no binding yet...
Often bookshops are more economical then printing free stuff from the web
with expensive ink.
If you need to look into an ephemeris only occasionally, then the online
version will be fione for you. But if you work intensively with astrology,
a printed ephemeris in book format has many advantages. Of course, I am speaking as a bibliophile.
Hello Astrodienst! Many thanks to you all for the wonderful information I
continue to find useful in my life! Today, when I logged in to check on
transits, progressions etc., I noticed the placement of a transiting planet
that seemed to have jumped into overdrive. I mean it appeared to have
changed positions significantly over night. Well, as it happens, I happened
to take a look at the degree of my ascendant house and noticed that it was
off by about 10 degrees. I believe something has changed in the way
placements are being calculated. You are probably aware of this but, if
you're not, then I thought I'd better say something. Once again, thank you
so much!! - Roscoe Woosley

Alois adds: For Lilith, please see: Homepage -> understanding astrology -> advanced astrology articles -> Lilith, the dark Moon and also the Swiss Ephemeris documentation, section 2.2
For computing lengthy ephemerides of any of the 69'000 numbered asteroids, please use the Swiss Ephemeris test page
You will want to use heliocentric mode, to derive the orbital period from a several years of orbit. Because our orbit calculation is done by numerical integration of the whole solar system, quantities like orbital periods are not directly
available, but must be derived backwards from the computed orbit.
Typical asteroid belt asteroids, like the ones you mentioned, have orbital periods between 4 and 5 years.

hi.
while i have been an avid astrodienst user for years, i feel that most of
your explanations could use a re-write.
looking at the johnny cash analysis, i know i am not interested at all.
it would have been far more interesting to know why ms. greened said or wrote
the things she did.
is this a computer generated report that liz greene writes the explanations
for?
am i to assume that she did not do his chart, but she wrote the automatic
responses for his aspects?
i do appreciate all that astrodienst does for its users in the way of free
charts etc, but dont we chart celebreties so that we can learn from their
rather public lives?
as astrologers?
so where's the meat ?as they say on tv over here. i would rather read about
his aspects, declinations(which astrodienst pays short shrift to in any
format), and progressions etc.
instead we get phsycho-fluff.

Alois adds: The sample reports we occasionally publish about celebrities are computer generated.
No specific knowledge about the person, except the birth data information, goes into those reports. Some targeted selection is made by our editors, to shorten the full report.
Every 'celebritiy' person wears a mask in public, has a public image which
in many cases is quite a different matter from how that person feels in private,
from close up, or from inside.
Our psychological horoscopes grasp essential
elements of the priviate, inside view of the personality, not the media-created
public image figure.
This is by design, not accidental. It would be very easy to write - by hand - up a fitting
obituary for a celebrity like Johnny Cash and relate it to his birth chart. What we try to do is MUCH harder: we let the same computer program compose the report, which composes all the other reports our customers order, when we have no additional information about a person aside from the birth data.
You misunderstand something fundamental
about astrology if you believe that simply from the birth data you will get
a complete picture of a person, including his/her media mask and his/her public deeds. It is NOT visible in the fundamental birth chart what Albert Einstein
did as a physiscist. In his birth chart however is a lot about what kind of man
he was, psychologically, and this is what you would find in his Psychological Horoscope.
If an astrologer is hostile versus psychological astrology in general - some are -, he is visiting
the wrong place at www.astro.com.
There are many levels of astrology, not only the one we prefer
to practice. If you find that you are not interested in what we have to offer - simply let it be. I would never believe that one truth is enough to serve all needs.
We publish sample reports not to teach astrology to astrologers, but to
give honest examples of what customers can expect from our computer reports, and to entertain
a little on the way. If an astrologer wants to learn Liz Greene's astrology as a student,
I recommend him to enroll in London at the CPA, her school, or to study her
books. The computer generated reports are created under conditions which are
very different from the live reading of a chart, with either a public person or a person sitting in front of the astrologer, and therefore make bad teaching examples.

In reply to Mary Bare's question: In my opinion the prog. Sun - while
important in unfolding events in a life - can never be considered to be
stronger than the ascendant degree (rising). With an accurate birth time, the
ascendant becomes the most personal point of a chart showing individuality
with particular precision. All 360 degrees of the zodiac have a specific
meaning, so 28 or 0 degrees of a sign is as meaningful as any other degree.
Progressed Sun is a pointer to the growth and direction of the person, but
from a character point of view, the Sag. ascendant remains what it is. In
your example for the Sun to progress into Capricorn it would have to be
conjunct the ascendant at birth. I wonder if you meant when the ASCENDANT
progresses into Capricorn 3 years later ? it might introduce a bit of caution
or order into the personality, although you would be talking about a little
kid, whose natural and spontaneous ways would probably remain fairly obvious.
However, it's my belief that a progressed Sun (which is more symbolic than
real) could never overpower the strength of the
Sag ascendant, which is extrovert and confident. In other words, the
ascending degree, and aspects to it, will remain clear and dominant
characteristics.

Alois adds: Be assured that our servers run in precise atomic clock time, delivered from one of the time standard sources. They never deviate more than a fraction of a second.
I think you are mistaken about what the current time is in UT/GMT, and what you local timezone offset versus UT is.
The time difference of New York to UT/GMT is currently 4 hours, until
daylight saving time ends in the US (in the morning of Oct 26 2003 at 02:00 AM). then it will be back to five hours.
UT/GMT is NOT the time of London, England, because London is on summertime at the
moment, like the rest of Europe. London is currently one hour ahead of UT/GMT.
In Europe, summertime ends also on the last Sunday in October, but at a different
absolute moment, expressed in UT, than it ends in the US.
Our servers run not in local time, but in Universal time. UT is derived
from the moment, when the 'mean Sun' crosses the 0° meridian. This moment
is quite independent from what the goverments says that the clocks should
show. It is a fact of nature, not a result of law or convention.
Nowadays, science does not use astronomical observation anymore for the
time standard, even when this standard leans on astronomy. The rotation
of the Earth is by a few fractions of a second too unstable to serve as
a standard, and also too hard to observe continuously. This is why the standard has
been transferred to counting oscillations of electron orbits in Caesium atoms,
called atomic time. Please use google to find more about that, if you are
interested. The formal name of the time standard is also TDT (terrestrial
dynamic time).
Thank you dear Astrodienst, Liz Green and Rob Hand, (who has assisted me
unaware over the years more than he will ever know) thank you for your
brilliant site and the bountiful plethora of information you give away so
freely.
Truly this is a excellent demonstration of how the few can make a positive
difference to so many.
I wish to respond to the previous letter from Down Unda with regards to
trines and their potential dificulties, as I do tend to agree with how they
can trip you up.
My birthchart reflects a perfect grand sextile, as well as a T-square and
some mystic rectangles. As you can imagine, a kazillion aspects are possible
at one time.
Today I only wish to comment on the energies of the grand sextile. As Rob
Hand noted in one of his books, a client had stated she found it difficult
sometimes to get moving, and I certainly can conncur with her.
The passivity brought about by the multiple trines (accented in my case with
sun in exact opposition to neptune) has assisted more in my problems than any
of the oppositions or squares.
(pardon, the 12th house Moon in exact opposition to Saturn gives
opportunities enough for pain)
With so many aspects going on all the time and so much needing to be
assimilated, it is my opinion my overly passive nature has served to negate
my own progess, and I find it difficult to get moving or give myself much
credit for accomplishments.
Oh, to be a strong and clear saggitarian, sigh...
Thank you again for all that you do! You have engaged my mind and energies
at times when others could never possibly relate.
Sincerely, and with affection for you all from Adrienne.

G'day there,
In response to a query posed by Prof. Subba Rao Kalluri.
Can Saturn ever be considered benefic?
To paraphrase the delightful Liz Greene, we can take a new look at the old
devilish urges of Saturn. Jyotish, (Hindu Astrology) is quite fatalistic and
strongly embraces the classical interpretation of Saturn as being all doom
and gloom. I have trouble accepting this diagnosis. I'm see Saturn as being
capable of tremendous assistance, as long as his energy is understood and
treated appropriately. I also consider the phrases benefic and malefic
somewhat difficult to digest. A hard Square or Oppositon aspect can be the
greatest possible thing to occur to the native at a given point. Conversely,
Trines can be a massive obstacle and could be considered malefic given the
appropriate circumstance. Things aren't set in stone quite that easily.
I remember reading an article about the Lot of Fortune, it may even have been
the one by Robert Hand. Saying that a malefic planet placed alongside the
Lot of Fortune can be troublesome and affect the grace of Fortune. I
disagree. It will have *an effect*. Thats all. Saturn happens to share
both house AND sign with my Lot of Fortune, some could say this energy has
manifested in adding focus, discipline and structure to the expression of the
Lot.
Aloise, there was a comment in the feedback section regarding and article
about something called a Harmonic Concordance - a complex aspect occuring on
the 8th of November this year (From memory) . There was also a link to said
article.
Why was the comment deleted from the feedback section?? I read the article
and felt it would be of great use to those more learned in the art and
practice of astrology. And for those not learned, for that matter.
Thanks for your time and space. I look forward to having the capital (one

I have noticed that a visitor to the feedback section has a problem with not
having the time of birth. I have a girlfriend with the same problem, and
her own mother cannot even recall it. In the USA, for some reason birth
times for the majority of the states are not summarily recorded as they once
where I was born in 1959 and both copies had my birth time on it. The copies
I refer to are the hospital's copy, and the final registrar's copy that is
kept by the state one was born in. My children, who are now 23, and one will
soon be 21, do not have their birth times listed on the registrar's copy.
They are listed on the hospital's copy, which I was fortunate enough to have
in my possession. I was also conscious during the births and was able to take
note of the times myself. Dr. Alois, in reference to a situation like this,
does your company have a service available in which one may get a form of a

Hello,
In terms of personaliy, does it matter if a person is born in the latter
degrees of a sign? For instance, you are born at 28 degrees Sag and 3 years
latter your sun progresses to Cap. During your formative years or childhood,

Hello everyone:
I will be having a solar return and a lunar return, within about 7.5 hours of
each other, on September 23, 2003 (I have a 0 degree Libra sun and the Moon
conjunct Pluto in Leo at about 26 degrees, natally). I will be 49 years old
on that date.
Would someone be kind enough to let me know (briefly) the significance of a
combined solar and lunar return ?
Thank you very much.

Dear Alois,
You give so much. Your website is a painkiller for me because I get so
emerced, so fascinated that I forget what my body is going through. I study
karmic asrology and currently I am at work on a warrior/ healer paradigm. I
wonder if you would be so kind as to let me work with your chart in reference
to my research? Some of the best thoughts that ever passed through my mind
have happened staring at your website.
Have you ever rectified your chart with Sabian symbols? This was a
valuable exercise for me. It changed my birth time by three minutes. It was
9:45 but was right at 9:48, an easy mistake to make. Now my rising degree,
vertex, and part of fortune resonate vividly. Nothing else changed. My astro
map confirmed it when my Venus rising landed on the city of my birth. Small
differences are pronounced on the Astromap. Do you think this is a valid way
of rectifying for a person with a planet immediately on the Ascendent? How
many miles equals one degree? I see alot of people seeking birth records. Do
they realize human error gives cause to check? Maybe nobody else see the need
for such precision. I have four planets in Virgo and my Part of fortune.
Thanks so much for rocking my world!!!!!!!!

Fantastic service folks. I would order the extended horoscope it it were
20.00 US. I'm also writing to share that when I had transiting Saturn
stationary on my Sun/Ascendent in 1975 for nearly a month I was unwittingly
living on my Saturn IC line in Cuernavaca Mexico. It was a very difficult
time, but there and then I met my teacher/ mentor/ master(ess) and would not
have it any other way. I think this function of Saturn is overlooked
frequently -- the appearance of the teacher/ master. In all my visits to
Mexico City (Saturn IC) I learn something from someone or something falls
into my hands i.e. a book, to teach me. Anyway, thanks again for the great
service. I shall order my extended horoscope when it drops to 20 US. -:)

Hello,
I just tried to subscribe to your offer of a two-month extended horoscope. I
discontinued when I saw that you need a mailing address to mail this info to
me.
I really don't want this MAILED to me -- I would much prefer to access it the
same way that I access my daily horoscope, just by clicking onto your
website.
Isn't this possible?
Otherwise -- this is simply a great site and service!

I would like to order a transit chart for the next year, hwever in teh
example it only shows outer planets. Although I know that the personal
planets move a lot more quickly I would like to see their transitory effects
i.e. venus - love and money for the next year. Which horoscope should I
order to glean more personal information. I have Jupiter going over my
ascendant and in two years going into my second house where most of my natal
planets live. As I am single I would like to know if there is any time where
the potentional to meet a mate can occur. In fact I now live in Dubai at the
advice of the astrocartography. I used to live in London and was dreadfully
unhappy and once I saw the astrocartography for the place it all made tragic
sense. I must say the accuracy of the astrocartography is extraordinary as I
lived in many countries and the readings have been extremely accurate. I now
live in Dubai my birthdate is 11:11:53 Beirut Lebannon.
Thank you for your advice on which chart I should order for the coming year

Dear Alois,
1. When I print my Forecast, there is no Pluto sextile Jupiter, which I
allready have. As somebody likes to give only bad Transits! I have Jupiter on
20 degree 48 of Libra.
2. I suggest, that the readers give advice to other readers in the case, you
don't give.
3. Untill two years ago, I had Sun (6 degrees 46 of Taurus) sextile Moon (13
degrees 34 of Pisces). Now I have nothing. Many Astrologers in their books
write, that Orbis between Sun and Moon is much bigger, than between other
Planets.

Also, traveling can change the houses.

Hi Alois Team!
I apologize for taking your valuable work/time yet again but, since I have
explored all the Chart Styles in the Free Chart Selection section and have
found none that would be Astrodienst Style in the orbs drawing type but
without the ChironVesta info/lines. - If could just add a check a box named
Aspect lines to ACMC before the Aspect lines to all the produced chart would
be just perfect!!
Further to this I just want to add that you people at Astrodienst never cease
to amaze me! I was in awe with the service you provide to us all when I found
the Lunar Phases Fertilty Calendar, only a few people know how valuable the
information Astro.com provides for free is. They have all sorts of awards out

nominated and win the Best Internet Site Award if there is one!!

You mentioned when announcing the change to charging for the service you

be.
Secondly, my south node is in Virgo. Would Jupiter moving into virgo have any

thoughts?

I read my free forecast today and I know that I major square between

Alois adds: Because the correct timezone assignment to your pair of coordinates
would be missing, a source of SEVERE errors.
Better a chart for a slightly
distant town, than one for the correct location with the wrong timezone information. A distance of 1 mile corresponds to a time difference of 4 seconds; a wrong
timezone makes a time difference of one hour, resulting in a worthless chart.
For each town in our list of 250'000 towns we have the correct and complete
local timezone history. We would not have that information for the random
pair of coordinates out in the middle of nowhere.

Just to say that I find it absolutely okay that you will start charging a fee
for the extended daily forecasts. You have been and will be providing so much
for free which is not only useful but also a joy and has shown me many new

on Thursdays, of course, than on any other day of the week. But on the other side, it
seems useful that visitors have a chance to check out what they will get
under a subscription.
-I just have to ask...
In regards to the daily (free -thank God(dess)) horoscopes, you do pay close
attention to the asteroids. In all my years I have spent little time on them
and in that respect wonder if they're influence is really that
substantial...? So, is it???
Thanks,

Alois adds: Actually, the daily horoscope pays no attention to asteroids, except Chiron. Many
astrologers which I respect claim an important influence for Chiron.
Why do the personal daily horoscopes and the forecasts neglect to consider
the major current aspects? Right now, for instance, there is a significant
Venus/Pluto aspect at work that's not even mentioned in the horoscope. It's
far more influential than the many of the minor Moon aspects that are
highlighted.
(I've noticed the same thing quite often in the past. So I thought I'd ask.
The site is great, but it would be so much more useful if it included the
important aspects.) Thanks!

due to transits over an individual's natal chart.
The aspect you mention is global, the same for everyone. Our visitors on the personal daily horoscope page would not be happy if each reader got the same global reading.

Alois adds: In the natal data record, you must use your birth town. In the
reference place setting for the Solar return, you can choose.
Different astrologers vary in their practice in this respect. Some schools of thought use also
the birthtown, but the majority uses the place of residence.
Some
people travel to special places on their birthday, to get a 'favourable' solar
return chart. I do not think that it works. The permanent place of residence,
where you are throughout the years,
will probably have an effect.
