Thank you Diane,
I realy want to study astrology more but the people at my church say that
it is an evil oracle and should be avoided. I dont know what to do.
Anyway I dont think I can turn back now. Soon my natal Uranus squares my
transiting Uranus. My natal Uranus is retrograde void of course. I wonder
what this means, I also wonder if it will be more intence than my sun
conjunction.

Dear Sir,
I have studied this website extensivley and have read your biography. I
believe you to be somthing of a visionary to be aware of the web in the mid
80's. This is a good website but I think you should make a message board so
viewers could exchange thier astrology knowelege with eachother and not have
to ask you (like they do on this feedback page). Then you can keep this page
open only for technical advice, regarding the website and praise.

Alois adds: I have observed many open discussion boards on the Internet over the years.
They often get dominated by cranks, who have the most time to spend there.
I do not want to take on the legal responsibility for offering a non-supervised
forum on our web server. We lack the staff for efficient supervision.
For those who like discussion boards, there are many possibilities
(usenet news, yahoo groups etc). I don't think that Astrodienst needs to
offer this too. There is really not shortage of astrology discussion groups.
The policy of Astrodienst is to concentrate our energies on
those services which we can do BEST,
better than anyone else.
I very much enjoy your site, and its practical tools. Is there any way to
calculate midpoints for a natal chart on your site?

Melanie, Uranus is sometimes called the great awakener, and its conjunction
brought you a new awareness of your Sun self. As it moves on, it's like a
new friend you meet in life who moves on leaving you with good memories and
the ability to move forward in a new direction on your own. As it moves
along to aspect other planets in your chart it may be you who introduces
someone else to astrology. I would encourage you to study your own chart and
learn to understand it by comparing what you learn about it to what you know
to be true about yourself.
Robert Hand's Transit book is an excellent resource, and so are Robert
Pelletier's books Planets in Houses, and Planets in Aspect: Understanding
Your Inner Dynamics. There are many good books, but these are among my
favorites for understanding and interpretation. Remember that transits move,
and how we react to them depend on our own chart positions.
You have a Uranus in your chart, too. Where is it hiding? Looks like it's
time to do a little more self-discovery. You may be very surprised. I
became interested in astrology during a divorce, and what I learned made me
wish I'd had the knowledge before we married. Astrology is a wonderful tool
for insight and understanding.
It could be a mistake to envy anyone with a single aspect, there are other
aspects that must be taken into consideration as well. Again, look to your
own chart, especially for the positive aspects. Where there are planets in
hard aspect, look to another planet that softens either of the planets in
that hard aspect with a sextile or trine. Nothing is all bad, and remember,
This, too, shall pass.

In reply to Melanie Casey
Dear Melanie,
Seeing that few people took time to give you feedback on your comment
regarding your Sun-Uranus transit, I couldn't help myself to write something
too. This is just a view of mine on the purpose of the whole carrousel of
galaxies, stars, planet's, people's and any biological entities
evolution.
In MHO, life is the constant learning process for all of us. And O don't mean
just people - according to Russian esoteric tradition, for example, the Earth
itself is the living creature and is on her way to becoming her true self, so
to speak - making mistakes, suffering, loving and living... The purpose of
each transit is not to tease you with something and leave you empty and
wondering what the censored it was. It can be bad or good, sugnificant or
totally unnoticed (it happens too, all depends on your perceptions). The
purpose of each transit is to show you what is possible, and according to how
you lived your life before, to open your eyes on things that you might have
been missing for one reason or other. I don't know what kind of person are
you or how well you are attuned to the uranian energy. But what your cry for
help telling me, is that probably you were not aware of the gifts that Uranus
can give us. And your transit did show you that things can be different -
that the purpose of Uranus. How you use this experience, is up to you. You
may explore your Uranus deeper and see what was it that wasn't letting you
enjoy it's crazy revolutionary high before - and also to be greatful for the
gift he gave you - Astrology, which he rules. With this tool, if youa re
serious, you may start the alchemical process of going for gold in yourself.
Meditate on Uranus, understand it, explore it in your chart, learn hoe you
may enhance it and how you may tame yourself sot that when the change comes -
and it won't always be the pleasant change - you will be ready to embrace it
and to find the reason and the lesson behind every, even the worst of
experiences (which Uranus is more than cappable of bringing!). What happened
to you is the gift - so take it form there. Appreciate what you've learnt
about yourself, recognize your strong points and weak ones - and work. For
some, astrology is the toy, entertainment, time-spending... For others - it
is much more serious and once one understands what great meaning is behind
all this and how it can guide each one of us, then and only then the real
work can begin.
Thus, you may bring back your courage, and being constantly on a subtle high
and all the good things it can bring...
Meditate, and don't forget that your recent depression may be to do not with
Uranus unconjuncting your Sun, but with some other serious transit going on,
which you might have missed, being so excited... And remember that transits
are there to teach, for only through experience can we learn thruth about
ourselves.
Good luck on your journey,
All the best,
Katia

To Melanie Casey, re your Sun-Uranus transit: Look, with all due respect,
just be glad that you had a good time with Uranus transiting your Sun, and
count your blessings. All transits can have good and bad sides, depending on
the aspects in your natal chart, and also depending somewhat just on
coincidence, and/or fate. I also have had Uranus transiting my natal Sun
until very recently, and believe you me, it was NOT a pleasant experience!
Surprising, yes - shocking, even. Totally unexpected, completely unforseen
and unforseeable - but pleasant, NO! I know the watchword for Uranus
transits is Expect the unexpected, but this was downright ridiculous. Since
I was astrologically knowledgeable, I had seen the aspect coming, and had
been wondering for at least the five previous years what the Uranus transit
to my Sun would mean. I considered emotional issues, romantic issues,
financial issues, career issues, health issues - I really thought I had
considered every conceivable possibility and was prepared for any
eventuality. Hah! They don't say Expect the unexpected for nothing. I would
NEVER have dreamed it would turn out to be what it actually was. I could
never have imagined such a thing, and I've done my fair share of cursing
Fate, or whatever, a la What have I ever done to deserve this?! It's not
FAIR! Much good it does you. Anyway, as I began by saying, just be glad
that you enjoyed the experience, and treasure the memory. Believe me, it
could have been a lot, LOT worse.

Please help me:
For the last couple of years, (since 2000) Uranus has conjuncted my
sun in Aquarius. At the begining I didnt know about this conjunction because
I was not into astrology. Ironicly I got into astrology when this aspect was
very active. I didnt know of my sun/uranus transit conjunction at that time
(looking back at your ephemeris I realize this). Now this transit is going
out of orb Uranus is five degrees away from my natal sun. The aspect is
waning as is the freedom and carefree disposision I felt.
I am very deppresed over all of this. I dont know what to do. I dont
feel very free anymore. This is not mind over matter because I didnt know I
had the aspect when I was so free.
I bought Robert Hands Transit book and feel the discription he gave of
the long term sun/uranus transit was fantastic, like he wrote what I was
feeling. Im afraid now I will never feel that excited and happy again. It
felt so good, like I was constantly on a subtle high. Can I ever keep that
feeling or is it gone along with the transit. This problem is eating away at
my life. Ifeel so envious for the people who were born with a sun/uranus
aspect. Whats the point of living knowing what I am missing out on?

Reply to John of Dunedin wishing to know which planets are major and minor.
In every chart the Sun Moon (polarities representing male female) carry the
most weight. Depending on your accurately calculated chart, however, another
planet appearing on an angle (ascendant/midheaven) can be more overtly
powerful in a chart. People who are outstanding in their generation will
usually have the slower-moving planets (Pluto, Uranus, Neptune) strongly
configured with the so called 'personal' planets (Sun, Moon and specifically
Mercury which dictates how they communicate). The beauty of the personal
chart is the unique combination of the chart. It is like a stage play, with
some characters being forceful and up front, while others are more subtle but
nevertheless integral parts which make up the whole. The ruler of the
ascendant too, is always powerful in the chart, the ascendant being the sort
of electric wire of personality which connects you into the environment. the
Sun/Moon polarity will show most clearly the true character while the other
planets enhance, contradict or cover this. Best wishes.

Dear Alois, First, thank you much for your service! Question: is it
possible to get precession corrected solar and lunar returns from your

the optimal location for a solar/lunar return is far from any town or city.

Alois adds: There may be a misconception about what www.astro.com is.
Astrodienst's website is for personalized horoscopes. The most popular
feature, the personal daily horoscope, is new every day for every visitor,
depending on his/her birth data. For all other horoscopes you get fresh,
different content each time you run it for a different person.
We keep this kind of information coming, if you keep the birth data coming.
Astrodienst's service includes also an information section, where you can
learm more about astrology in general. This area is more or less static;
new articles are added from time to time. Most of the information in this
area is timeless reference material. It does not require updates, though
it is occasionally expanded.
Astro.com is not a 'news service' with daily news, as you might find them
on many web portals or TV stations.
We have neither the interest nor the staff capacity for that.
Please visit CNN.COM or turn the TV on if you want to 'keep the news coming'.

Hallo,

wiederzufinden, was bereits in früheren Beziehungshoroskopen mit
anderen Partnern bzw Partnerinnen stand. Es kann ja sein, dass Sie sich,
bzw. dass Ihre Partnerin sich immer wieder durch ähnliche Wesensmerkmale
angezogen fühlt und dass Sie dieselben Verhaltensmuster und inneren Haltungen
in jede neue Beziehung
PS: Das Beziehungshoroskop kostet EUR 49.95. Auf EUR 86 kommt Ihre Partnerin,
wenn sie Hardcover-Luxuseinband, Horoskopzeichnung und Kurierzustellung
dazunimmt. Für den Inhalt sind das unwesentliche Optionen.

identifies Venus quincunx Neptune 2,39' and Venus quincunx Uranus 2,42' but
this is not identified in the pdf tables. Are the orbs more ridged in the pdf?

Alois adds: There is no such thing as "THE" horoscope or "THE" correct
set of orbs and aspects. Different astrologers use different rules, and
have an individual style. If you look into the variations under
"extended chart selection" you will notice.
The author of one of the reports on our site will have defined
some rules for orbs and aspects to be used with his/her delineations, while
another author will have a different set of rules. For the chart drawings,
there are nearly endless variations. It is a matter of taste and style.
Once upon a time, in the Calcutta YMCA, I was quite astonished to find
a Japanese guy putting lots of salt and pepper onto his breakfast porridge.
Tastes vary.
On your Astrocartography world map, what is the method for recognising the
least-aspected-planet Is it something to do with degrees?

Hi, and thanks for a very helpful site. I might be missing something, but it

Hello Alois and staff,
Your articles are quite helpful, but I did notice a small error in the piece
on harmonics. It says that the 36th harmonic will show conjunctions of all
points that are 36 degrees apart. As you know, it is points that are 10
degrees apart that will be in conjunction in the 36th harmonic chart. Points
36 degrees apart will be in conjunction in the 10th harmonic. With all the
positive feedback you get, I'm wondering if Astrodienst has a horoscope for
its beginning that would reflect this? Or perhaps just the horoscope of
Alois...Thanks for your efforts.

Alois adds: You are right, Wayne, there was an error on page /info/in_harmon_e.htm. It was a translator/editor error, the German page said it correctly. I have
fixed it. Thanks for pointing it out.
I think success is based on hard and creative work. This means 5% inspiration
and 95% transpiration. For
the inspiration I have a grand trine involving Uranus in 2 ("modern ways to earn a living"), and including
Mercury in 10 ("intelligence from the mother - both parents actually") and Moon in 6 ("work for the people"). For the transpiration,
I have an exact Sun-Saturn opposition.
If you dig patiently in the guestbook archives, you might find my chart data.
The company chart is not that relevant, because Astrodienst as a service
was started at an undocumented date in Jan 1980, several years before
Astrodienst AG was incorporated in 1983.
The incorporation chart can be found on the website - with some luck.
Try /prod/pr_miniature_g.htm. It is 4-oct-1983, 16:00, Zürich.
I have subscribed to your PDF drawings and want to give them to my clients
however the page is
set up to cut off the left hand side with their
name and information concerning placement of
the planets. Could you please reset the page
position to fit better with the leter size
stationery.
Thank You for your great charts and a progressed
and transit chart would be great.

Alois adds:
PDF drawings are scalable files which you display on your screen with
Adobe Acrobat (or another PDF viewer program).
You can do this
a) by the Acrobat "plugin" from within your browser, or
b) by saving the files on your local disk, and then opening
them with Acrobat Reader independent of your browser.
Printing screen content from within the browser has always been poor,
due to the way the browser makers chose to implement it.
On my PC, the print dialogue however has an option 'shrink oversized
pages to paper size'. The availability of such options depends
on the printer driver you use.
Printing from Acrobat Reader gives you much better options for placement
on a page, for scaling etc.
I would recommend you use this method b).
It is not a question of how our files are sized, but how your
application scales them when sending them to a printer.

Dear people at Astrodienst: hello! I hope this letter finds you doing
great.
First, I want to thank you again for sharing such a wonderful site!
I have some questions: I've my solar return, and this year my first
house/ascendant is Aries. That means that the house 12 is in Piscis. And that
also means that I should take Mars as one of my personal planets. This two
facts I base on my intuition, are they correct?
Anyway, Uranus is at 28.50 -degrees, but I cannot find the key- Aquarius. BUT
house 12 starts at 23 Aquarius. Which one should I regard as the most
powerful influence??? What I mean is, Should I think that this year I may
disrupt/shock nebulously towards faith? (house 12 Piscis/Uranus in house
12)Or should I value more the fact that I will disrupt humanely/independantly
(Uranus in Aquarius)?
My second question is: which house is asociated with one's own children (sons
daughters)???
Well, I thank you in advance for your kind attention!
Best regards,

I'd have thought that the aesthetics of moon in Taurus in the 12th would give
rise to something rich and wholesome, karma, krsna, freedom from the ego, the
cow being the sacred peaceful creature in the house of death, why do you
interpret it as an aspect indicating unpopularity and a life you advise best
geared to solitude?
Thing is, I'm back to my chicken/egg dilemma, if you change the way you look
at it all, you having the best handle on the zeitgeist I know, the heavenly
movements would the significant shift - seeing the brighter side and focusing
on it, change the way things are? It's really the power of thought forms I
am questioning, I believe your angle on my chart is significant, so it is -
self fulfilling prophecy. But then, can't blame you for years of traditional
interpetations. What I can do is challenge you to find the most positive
side of an aspect and show it to us, it's not just a bunch of priveleged folk
with trines off their ascendant in first house that are shining examples of
humanity and worldly success...
My chart pivots on challenges that are not destined to be overcome, aspects
to my fixed houses.
Basically, can you help?

Pluto,

The details at the astro maps are quite wonderfull but how one can
use that to deduce the best place especially there are thin lines (
unfavourable ) crossing in the harmonius part of the map. Since the astro
maps reflect the birth time positions what would be the result of the present
planetary positions. Can a person whos astro map show 90% bad can get better
period at a later date in his or her life. Hope my prayers will be answered.

I was thinking of one thing in my way of integrating my whole chart. Some
planets and signs are feminin, others being masculin.
I am a man and ordered my psychological analysis for a man as I am
obviously.
My belief is that it is important to integrate both feminin and masculin
planets and sign to be fully our Self.
So, do you think it may be useful to order my analysis for a woman instead as
for a man? As you are the designer, we can tell me if the analysis for a man
and for a woman are similar or different. Is it useful to order the analysis
as if we were the opposite sex?

Alois adds: A chart reading is a work of art, like a painting. In the same way
as a painting reflects the view of the painter, a chart reading reflects
very much the views of the particular astrologer, even
when he/she 'paints' something - more or less - objective, e.g. a person's personality.
Liz Greene's style of reading a chart is not very gender specific.
It would not
make sense to order the Psychological Horoscope with the reversed gender, it will be 95% the same.
Significant differences are in the sections about parental images - a male child
experiences mother and father differently from a female child - and in the
section on relationship patterns. In the other sections, only a few
gender specific words will be different.
I have no high opinion about "as if" charts, e.g. "how would the chart be
if I were born somewhere different". In German the say, that if it wasn't for
the word 'if', we would all be the children of millionaires.

Alois adds: Thanks for the kind feedback, Cathy. We try to do our best, because
excellence in work is most satisfying. It is nice to see this effort acknowledged
by other professionals.
The reasons for age restrictions in horoscopes are manyfold. For example, Liz
Greene's Psychological Horoscope or Careeer and Vocation horoscope are written
for adult readers. A lot of the content does not describe the still developing
personality of a child appropriately. therefore the age limits for most of
her reports is 14 years.
Also many other reports describe personal issues on a level which simply
does not apply to a small child. Some technical reasons exist as well, e.g.
would a transit report for a newborn show a full set of conjunctions, which
need several years to resolve, in the case of slow planets which turn
retrograde. For such reports - and for the daily horoscope - we have set the
age limit to 6 years.
We have special reports for children, or for relationships with children, and
for these there is not age restriction. In any case we require a person to be
born already. For ethical reasons we do not want to see our reports used
for the timing of planned births or - horribile dictu - abortions. We
dont' want to play any part in such manipulative power games.
Love your site, and am wondering if you have any plants to incorporate lucky
days and numbers into your daily Horoscope?

The course of infinite regression would be your choice, nobody forces you

Maybe your second favourite pasttime is splitting hairs: it is also your choice of stopping after the first successful split, or of going for infinite regression and splitting each hair fraction again until physical nature stops you.
In the case of Persona Charts, a second split might make an interesting experience
in fine tuning, e.g. finding the Saturn persona of your Mars chart. You just
need to know when to stop. Your feelings will tell you, if your mind doesn't.

Your reading of the day was:
Obstacles
This may be a somewhat difficult
day, full of frustration and
irritating occurrences. Do not
plan to launch any daring or risky
activity, because the chances are
activity, because the chances are
that you will not succeed. Your
energies do not have the necessary
vigor or power. It is better to
concentrate upon routine
activities that require you to
follow a well-established pattern.
Other people may seem unusually
irritating to you today. They may
seem to be trying to "get your
goat," or worse, to be taking
actions that are quite destructive
to you and your interests. You
feel angry, but this influence does
not often give you the opportunity
to express your anger. You may
be forced to seethe in silence,
although it is not a good idea to
let the energy just sit inside you.
It can become physically
destructive.

I'd just like to point out that Persona Charts will obviously lead to an

that each planet in my horoscope has its own chart, then surely each planet

I Have Saturn on my fifth house. When I was younger, my main problem was to

still a problem. It's quite a poor one, since I'm 22 now and I only had one
boyfriend, when I was 21. As a matter of fact, I shouldn't say it's a
problem of attraction: if I go to a party, for example, it's pretty common
that some guys in one night come up to me. The real problem is to relate to
men in a deeper level - not only at the sexual one - but in an emotional
level. It seems that I'm unable to like men and it seems that none of them
is interested in me for anything beyond one night stands. Is there anything
to do with Saturn on my fifth house? How can I work it out?

book review: just received LG's CPA vol. 14 Relationships and How to Survive
Them via mail order. Despite the inconvenience of mail order and the doubly
expensive price, it is a must buy and worth every hard-earned Euro. I'm
rather amused by the serious Virgo-looking hardcover and binding job, unlike
the more attractively designed LG titles commonly available in stores.
Seeing as the Maestro puts such a heavy emphasis on the
progressed composite, would Alois now consider to add this one technique to
the menu? Thank you for your consideration. Also picked up E.W. Neville's
Planets in Synastry at the store at about a third the cost of the
aforementioned LG volume. This book, like LG's, is devoted to the idea of
the composite horoscope. Given the lack of material on this subject, these
two volumes are required reading. Although a cookbook, E.W.'s writing
combines genuine insight with an always refreshing Seinfeldian wit.

Dear Alois,
My nephew had my chart done from you ( Tristan) and by accident it was
printed in German (which I cannot speak) and so it was reprinted in
english.
I still have both versions of the chart and noticed that on the German
version
Uranus is in exile but not on the english version? (Uranus in Leo 28 20
2r)
I'm still studying to know what everything means and perhaps this means
nothing ... just curiousity.
Thanks for the site, Julia

Alois adds: This term 'in exile' is a bit of rather old fashioned astrological
terminology, and it may even be incorrectly translated from German.
Our website offers various chart styles in 'extended chart selection' and some
of these chart styles consider these 'digities'. I think the correct English term
is that a planet is 'peregrine'. You can look this up in the Astro Dictionary.
I bought a carrier and vocation horoscope one month ago and i was surprised
that Liz GREENE, in the one hand doesn't precise in parenthesis about what
aspects or planets in houses she refers to in her comments(it would have
aloweded me to compare to my own knowledge and understand better what she was
talking about!).And in the other hand, why did not she talk about my midheaven
in Leo(which i believed it was important for the choice of a carrier..)

Alois adds: Most of the reports by Liz Greene are highly synthesized, based on
an analysis of the complete chart. Most of the text you get to read does not
reflect single chart factors (like a particular planet in a particular house,
as you might find it in a more conventional astrological reports with less built-in intelligence)
but it describes issued derived from complex patterns which were identified in
your chart.
Also, the text is free of any astrological jargon. It is meant to be read by
normal people, who want to know more about themselves, but have not studied
astrology, and to whom a term like 'midheaven Leo' means ZERO.
Astrologers
tend to read their charts themselves and not via computerized reports. If an
astrogically educated person like you
believes to know exactly how her chart should be read and what she want to find
it it, this is also the more recomended procedure.
If you think your cooking

Alois, your thinking regarding transparency is to be commended. How many of
us wish the organizations that we belong would operate in such a way. The
members, their clients and vendors would feel safe because of a simple
commitment to trustworthiness. I have long applauded your sense of
candidness, now it represents a role model of the highest order.
Astrodienst introduced me to the universe’s time-piece. The universe seems
to be the most principal-centered entity that I have encountered. Truly your

Alois adds: We are happy that things seem to be working out smoothly. We had
hot discussions at Astrodienst whether to put all this 'problem' information
up on the website.
My colleagues argued that it somehow makes us look weak.
I argued - and decided - that it should be put up: if the network had gone
down for a week, we would be flooded with despaired messages, and once we
had been online again, tens of thousands of emails would wait in our mail
queue, ready to bring down our mail server.
By putting up the information about the critical state of the KpnQwest operation at least our 'frequent visitors' (there are very many of these) had a good
chance of seing this message before the network went down, so they would know
what the problem was and that we would be back.
Many companies would choose not to put up a warning, as it makes them always
look like a weak victim. Astrodienst is a bit different: our issue is excellence in
service, not excellence in looking or sounding perfectly polished.
It is great to find the same spirit of service with the KpnQwest employees. I am very grateful to those who keep the systems going. It is worthwile
to read the linked statement fully.
I'm so glad this site will still be available. I thoroughly enjoy it on
daily. Thank you and God Bless!!!

The calculations you did for my natal chart did not reflect intercepted signs
and I was concerned about it's accuracy. I was born at 5:54 a.m., CDT, June
6, 1937 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. In all my charts, Gemini is
intercepted in the 12th house as is Sagitarius in the 6th. Can you advise
whether or not you use calculations which include interecepted signs? Thank
you.

Alois adds: If you look at your chart drawing you SEE the intercepted signs.
They are not a calculation issue; whether you get intercepted signs or not
depends on the house system you choose. If anything, intercepted signs
are an issue for INTERPRETATION. Some astrologers put emphasis on it,
some don't. As everything in chart reading, it is a matter of choice, style
and individual expression by the astrologer who does the reading.
In my free forecast there is no forecast from the 30 of july untill the end

Nice website, thanks!
Minor things, on a standard monitor, the type is so small that the 6 looks
like an 8 so sometimes difficult to tell which degree is the right one! On
MS Internet Explorer, have to use Text size: largest to be able to read this
on a high resolution 17 .25 monitor. So great if you can expand charts to
more easily viewable with standard browser settings (and then the viewer can
scroll up or across).
Perhaps you could display a full page from a given ephemeris, for any given
month, the same as looking at a page in an actual ephemeris. This helps in
seeing what is happening with the transits, retrogrades, aspects etc over
time, a compliment to the snapshots of the chart drawings.
But, either way, appreciate your contributions, thx.

Hello! Once again I'd like to thank you all for creating and sharing such a

We -me and my husband- are expecting our very first baby on August 4th, this
year.
I don't know -obviously!- what time bay girl will be born and neither I know
what time my husband was born, his mother doesn't remember! I'd love to see
their charts, at least to know where the planets are and which aspects they
make.
But as I cannot fill the time, the site doesn't give me any option and says
that in order to see anything I have to complete the hour blank, my question
is: is there anything I can do to -at least- see a plain chart for my baby
and my husband???
Thanks in advance for your help

Alois adds: Thanks, Pam, to you and all others who have commented on the
provider problem. So far we have been lucky, the network of the bankrupt KpnQwest
ist still operating on Sunday morning.
The key problem is that not only our server in KpnQwest's data center
will be disconnected if their network fails, but that also the Internet
connection from our office runs via the KpnQwest network, so that we will
be unable to communicate by email or to reach our own server once this connection goes down. The
switching on of a new line to our office has only be promised to happen
withing 6-9 days by Swisscom. We hope it will go quicker, and we hope that
the network of KpnQwest Switzerland will hold up. The good point is that
all these data centers are within 5 miles from our office and that we
know the people who work there for us personally.
A bit of history: in 1998 the formerly independent Eunet Switzerland, our
provider for many years, merged with Eunet Europe, which was then purchased
by the US company Qwest. Qwest had an attractive and aggressive strategy of
building high capacity optical networks in America, and it applied this
strategy also to ist daughter company in Europe (which had been turned into
a joint venture with Dutch telecom leader KPN and renamed from Eunet into KpnQwest).
However, the telecom and Internet marked slumped after 2000 and the very
high investments into the new 'fibre rings' in Europe, which were financed
by bonds and banks, became a burden. The mother companies Qwest and KPN
got into a difficult financial positione themselves and stopped financing
their daughter, on which they had imposed an agressive policy of capital
spending.
While Kpnqwest continued to do an excellent job for its mostly commercial
customers, the creditor banks pulled the plug. Kpnqwest is the victim of
an agressive strategy imposed on it by outside forces.
I have worked with the people of former Eunet AG, now KpnQwest Switzerland,
for 15 years, since the earliest days of the Internet. They are very competent
and it was a pleasure to work with them; their staff is still helping now with
our move to the competition, Swisscom.
The Swiss
government is the majority share holder of Swisscom.
Swisscom has made a big effort in recent years to turn from a state monopolist
into a major player in the new telecom world, with a lot of success.
They have been more conservative in their business approach and are now one
of the very few European telecom companies with healthy profits. We hope that
the move to Swisscom will bring us the stability we need for our future
operations.
