Thanks for the information provided at the site. I believe it helps many people. But the chart tells me that my ascendant is Libra while I got Capricornus in another book.
I don't know which is right ?!
For your information, my birthday ( 1962-oct-16 7:15am ) was within the daylight saving period. Will it be the reason of the discrepancy ?
Many many thanks !

Most errors are made with timezones and daylight savings time.
Your birth was with Pacific daylight time, so Universal time is 7 hours
more, or 14:18 ( = 2.18 pm).
This gives 25 degrees Cancer rising - no room for
a second opionion, really,
as this is pure math once we agree on time and place.

Thank-you sooo much for offering this free service. So many of us are truly grateful. I am, however, getting a bit frustruated about one thing: my rising sign! My birthdate is Oct. 4, 1974 at 3:05 pm (15:05) in Springfield, Illinois. For the last four years I've believed that my rising sign was in Aquarius because ALL the manual charts that my astro-expert godmother and many many others have performed on me yielded this result. According to you all, however, it's in Capricorn. I also have three co-workers standing by me (we're all astro crazy) who are totally perplexed about their rising signs also. I won't be crushed or anything if a Capricorn rising is true, but I will be a little disappointed, being that I've trully believed it was Aquarius all this time (I really do have the Aquarius qualities). Please respond and explain to us why our rising signs appear to be off.

Alois adds: Dear L.,
I got your personal mail first, before I saw the guestbook entry.
Here you give the birth place now, so I can answer.
There was daylight savings time in Springfield, IL at that date,
and Universal time is 5 hours added, or 20:05.
With this data you get 23 degrees Capricorn rising - there is nothing you can
do. You would have to shift your birth time to 15:26 to get Aquarius rising.
I assume your forgot to consider daylight savings time when you did your
do-it-yourself chart.
Astrodienst sells charts since 1980, and I wrote most of its software. If I
know anything well, it is how to compute a chart. The only sources of error
are with timezones and daylight savings time, where we depend on published
data collections.
This website has revolutionized my life. (Natal Uranus focal t-square in 7th). Thank you so much for giving this information back to the people, where it should be. Now it can be cultivated amongst all people, and they can empower themselves through self-understanding. Right on!!!

For us who are living north of the Polar Circle, some of the charts that are coming up are a bit strange. On the time of the day when the ascendant is going backwards (from Gemini to Capricorn), the chart drawings coming up show the opposite of what is true.
An example: 17 dec 1997 at 12:00 in Tromsø.
On the "time conversion page" it says that the ascendant is in Pisces, but when the drawing comes up, it shows an ascendant in Virgo. Is this something that is possible to fix? That would make this wonderful site even more perfect.
Greetings from a perfectionistic Virgo...
God jul, forresten
Truls Bjørknes [ *hotmail.com ]
Tromsø, Norway --- Monday, December 15, 1997 at 18:21 Swiss time
Alois adds: Dear Truls, you have observed right. On our webserver, we
use two different programs. On the timezone page, the Ascendant is computed
with the SwissEphemeris house calculation. We have thought carefully about
houses beyond he Polar circle and try to make it right there. We allow the MC
to be below the horizon, and the Ascendant is always rising in the eastern
hemisphere.
For the chart display, however, we use Walter Pullen's program Astrolog,
which contains a model for Ascendant and MC calculation at northern latitudes
which we now consider to be inadequate.
After your message, I have written to Walter and sent him the new Swiss
Ephemeris source code for house calculation. I hope he will imbed it in
Astrolog. I have no time at the moment to fix Astrolog myself. Please
take the Ascendant from the timezone page as the correct one.
For four days our guestbook could only be read,
not written, due to a file permission error.
For increased security on our server I made some files read-only
which should not have been.
A literal bit of over-protection was added for the guestbook file which
should be written to by visitors.
I apologize to those who tried in vain. If the 'write to guestbook' page
fails again, please send an email to the
webmaster.

I love this site but I have one big problem/question. Astrodienst charts frequently come up with the wrong ascendent, compared to a couple of other programs which I use. This is annoying because I love your graphic presentation of the data, but the wrong ascendent is pretty serious. It seems like the time zones are wrong or are thrown off. For instance, I looked up August 9, 1965 at 8 pm in Phoenix, AZ and got 2 Pisces; I ran it again for 7 pm and got 12 Aquarius, which I knew from other programs is the correct data for that date and time (which is Mountain Daylight time in August.) Since your site specifically has the button "update timezone" I would think that Daylight time was automatically included. What's up with this? Am I doing something wrong?

Very nice site indeed. Thank you for you work.
I was sort of disappointed, however, to find

I would appreciate it if you could send a list of dates (and hour)
when the Ukraine timezone changed from +3 to +2, and also when summertime
started and ended. We would be very happy to correct this information.
Please also add what your source for this information is.
We have over 10'000 cities listed under USSR and it would need a volunteer
to separate them into the states which were former parts of USSR.
ACS, the company where we got our data from has been unable to deliver the
new lists, and we do not have the resources to do this work ourselves.
Update 2-Jan-1998: I have spent many hours over the last few days on
writing a separation program. Now the USSR is separated also in our database.
First of all, thank you so much for the FREE chart availability. I have but two questions... Is it the moon that says what your rising sign is? And what does Chi and Nod stand for?
Danke!
Rebecca Moore [ *castles.com ]
Benicia, USA --- Monday, December 1, 1997 at 20:29 Swiss time
Alois adds: The Moon has nothing to do with the rising sign. The Zodiac
is a circle on the sky consiting of twelfe sectors - 30 degrees each - which
are called the signs of the Zodiac. In 24 hours this sky rotates once around
the earth, in our perception (in reality the earth rotates). In the average
every two hours a new section of the zodiac - a new sign - rises in the east.
This is the rising sign.
Chi stands for the asteroid Chiron, Nod stands for the Lunar Node, a mathematical
point where lunar and solar eclipses can occur.
