Discussion about
Luciano Pavarotti, born 12 October 1935 at 01:40 AM in Modena

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

Regardless of whether you are an opera fan, you know Luciano Pavarotti. He cut quite a figure on stage whether he was in concert or starring in an opera. His often-sung Nessun Dorma from Turandot could bring tears to your eyes. Unlike Turandot's nameless hero, everyone knew Pavarotti's name. Can you hear him now at the end of that powerfully moving aria: "All'alba vincero, vincero, vin-CER-o"? Perhaps I am guilty of too much poetic license, but these words ("At dawn, I shall win") sound strangely prophetic to me given that he completed his final contest, conquering the struggles of the physical plane, by departing life at about 5 AM on the morning of September 6, 2007. His talents, his lust for life, his colorful personality endeared him to his public and his recordings will ensure his place in the hearts of future generations. Let's review his chart this week.
  • Pavarotti was a man of big appetites--especially for art and music and food. In an interview with Mike Wallace for "60 Minutes" Pavarotti's playful side and his sense of humor are evident. In one scene, we witness a huge Pavarotti driving a small motor scooter, weaving in and out with Wallace in back, trying to grab on to the rotund waist in front of him. It might have been staged but the scene is a hoot. Where in the chart do you see Pavarotti's love for life, for beauty, for the pleasures of the senses? Are there astrological factors that might be associated with weight problems and where are they in his chart?
  • Where is that intensely beautiful voice in the chart? You might look to Venus-Neptune conjunction but often there are multiple ways a talent can be expressed astrologically. What are some of the others? In opera, one needs more than a beautiful voice. What factors in the chart show Pavarotti's ability to act, to emote, to move his audience so powerfully?
  • The great tenor had popularized opera without giving up one iota of excellence. Where is the ability to bring opera, usually considered a high-brow art, to the masses? If his mother had asked you to interpret his chart when he was a child, where would you have noted his future fame and fortune? What factors might indicate that he would become the standard-bearer in his field and famous for many generations to come?

he was a big guy and he has jupiter square the ascendant... was he always a big guy?
i like how the venus-saturn opp is rather prominent... he makes a career(saturn) out of singing - venus.. does it matter that venus is in virgo? was he married? if so, my guess is one wife and long term... maybe she was his manager initially.. i don't know much about him and i haven't read the bio.. i don't follow opera so i am out of my league musically as well...
i'll go read the bio.

just read the bio... he was into sports - jupiter - when he was younger and put the weight on later... he started having an affair with someone on staff during the transit of saturn through pisces, probably over that venus/saturn opp... that ended his long term relationshp with his first wife.. this astrology is rather predictable sometimes!

my two cents, I was impressed by the collocation of the planets and the way they interweave one with the other. He had the world, his natal chart shows him all around and in the center of it. I also thought, since I just knew he had died, that he died of suffocation, maybe because of a heart failure. But then I saw it was pancreatic cancer.

Venus/Neptune conjunctions frequently confer musical talent. The trine to MC/Uranus suggests a career and recording. Mercury opposing the Moon/MC midpoint suggests singing.

With all of the blue and red lines running across his chart, it looks like a the hologram of a star. Everything appears to be connected and almost 3 dimensional.
I would have thought him to be a Taurus or with a strong Taurus influence. I suppose that the Taurean MC with Uranus conjunct and Mercury opposing might qualify, still one might expect the Sun or Venus or the 5th house cusp to produce such a magnificent voice.

The chart visually makes a statement about the man - all over the place, I think someone said. There is so much going on it's hard to sort it out. That's how I envision his life. It took 8 people to keep track of his appointments, travel, and concerts.
There are many artistic elements in his chart: His Sun is in Libra so art and beauty are part of his being. It resides in the second house. The house of Taurus is earthy, sensual, phycially oriented. With Venus ruling the house of his Sun, he was always seeking beauty and the finer things in life (including fine food).
If you met him his Leo ascendant would have smacked you in the face: the performer, the actor, the center of attention, a person impossible to ignore.
The Venus/Neptune conjunction indicates a beautiful voice, but it also has an element of poetry and imagination. He had the ability to make people imagine. Mercury in its own house of communication could have been another factor in his vocal ability. An adeptness and an appreciation of language that made his singing even more powerful. Add to that the fact that Mercury is at zero Scorpio, and wow, he brings incredible intensity to whatever he is getting across to his audience.
This Mercury configuration is in opposition to Uranus in Taurus. This is the theme of beauty and imagination again. Uranus is the spark of genius, the electrifying quality of his voice which could thrill people. This is bringing enlightenment to the masses. In the Ninth House - he brought it to people all over the world.
The fact that they are in opposition, I don't know. I heard that he could be quite the prima donna, rude, and impatient. Maybe some Scorpio nastiness was one side of his character, and charming, welcoming, Venusian tolerance was another side of him. The more public side, being in the Ninth House.
Another indicator of a beautiful voice - The Midheaven is in Taurus.
Saturn opposing his Venus/Neptune conjunction is weak. Because of his lack of self-discipline, he had a weight problem which led to other problems. His surgery and pain made it difficult for him to sing. But He was able to lose 50 lbs. when he got help with discipline from a partner (Seventh House).

Fascinating he has ninth harmonics between his 8th Moon/ 7th Saturn and 2nd Sun/1st Venus. My understanding of ninth harmonics is they point to the fruits born from his natal chart.
By the houses and planets involved he looks like one that would prosper through the arts... or artistic expression.

By equal house, the chart seems to be weighted down by Jupiter in Scorpio in 4 house acting as a focal point for the splash pattern of the whole chart - this would seem appropriate for one who enjoyed sport as a youngster and enjoyed all kinds of excesses as an adult - big appetites might also be the Ascendent ruler Sun in libra 2 house opposite sparkling Moon in aries in 8 house. The same configuration would indicate that brilliant magnetic personality and add another factor for that beautiful voice shown by Venus Neptune conjunction. The Venus Neptune conjunction might also contribute to the confused circumstances surrounding his finances as well as his illicit love affair. Of course Uranus conjunct the MC sky rocketed him to world fame and in Taurus woke people up to their feelings with his unique pull on their emotions.

I'm not a huge expert in Harmonics but I've been dabbling recently. And Pavarotti's are fascinating. His 9th Harmonic has Sun Pluto conjunction in musical Pisces in the 5th, a powerful presence in the entertainment house. That is opposition dynamic Mars in hard working Virgo square the Moon's North Node so focussing his attention out to the public mood. He's also got Moon Saturn in the 10th so hard working in a public career opposition Jup Uranus in 4th (home comfortable but restless) square Neptune, again emphasising the creative musical element. His 5th Harmonic (the creative craftsman) has a 10th house Sun opposition Moon Venus in 4th squaring onto Ascendant and North Node on the Pisces Ascendant. So the same themes of nurturing from home/family giving support to career success and channelled towards a very public Piscean image. The 5H also has two water grand trines - so drawing on great emotional resources, though not open about his own feelings and private life. Mercury trine midheaven trine Jupiter (the expansive, confident voice boosting career). Also Neptune trine Saturn Pluto trine Ascendant so an almost magical ability to turn darker emotions to creative ends. Saturn Pluto and Mars in 8th which is useful for tragic roles! His 7th Harmonic (also a creative harmonic) has successful Jupiter in 10th square Moon Pluto in 7th; and Sun conjunct MC sextile Mars - so again same themes, quite fascinating. [Harmonics use equal houses and MC not cusp of 10th] www.astroinform.com

Casting a quick eye over famous opera singers charts, some thoughts. The two others of substantial bulk - Tito Gobbi and Jessye Norman both have Jupiter in 4th square ascendant and fire Moons like Pavarotti. All of the ones I looked at have really difficult charts which just goes to show. And very strong Saturn which makes sense for a career which demands such discipline. The men tend to have Saturn Venus contacts. Domingo and Gobbi have Venus Saturn trines, Pavarotti an opposition and Boris Christoff a Venus Saturn conjunction - so turning Venus creative skills into solid results. The women oddly enough seem to have Mars Saturn as well as Venus. Maria Callas had an exact Mars Saturn sextile Neptune, sextile Venus. Kiri Te Kinawa has an exact Mars Saturn conjunction again trine Venus. While Jessye Norman has a wide Mars Saturn conjunct her Ascendant - her Venus is semi-sextile Saturn. Jose Carreras has Saturn Pluto in 10th; Boris Christoff has Saturn Pluto Venus conjunction (no birth time); and Domingo has Sun opposition Pluto square Saturn Jupiter in Taurus. Gobbi has Saturn and Pluto (not really conj) in 9th with Pluto conj MC and Mars Neptune in 10th. Not sure where the operatic/musical signature is in all this. Maybe in the harmonics.

Grand trine of Mars in Sag and Moon in Aries to the Ascendant Leo gives talent, and a Kite is formed by Sun in Libra opp. Moon in Aries. Full moon--big voice, big belly, big emotions, powerful. Leo rising--very dramatic. Venus and Neptune in Virgo, conjunct, in Ascendant, rising, very much a projector of love and artistic talent.
No one can sleep under a full moon, at least I can't, and it is interesting that "Nessun Dorma," "No one sleeps," is his theme song, with his full moon chart. Moon in Aries seeks victory, and is competitive, also Mars in Sag is competitive, so "I will win," or "Vincero," fits his personality.
Jupiter on Nadir, in Scorpio, shows that sex and food are big draws for him. Jupiter square Ascendant--weight problem.
Jupiter on Nadir, angular--great success, a benevolent man, who does things in a very big way.
Uranus in Taurus shows an outstanding voice, and this trines his Venus in Virgo, which rules the voice, so an unusually good voice is indicated.
Pluto in Cancer--death through food, food obsessions? This is adverse to his Moon in Aries.
Sun in Libra is conjunct a quasar which is at 15 degrees of Libra. A quasar sun tends to fame and success.

Uranus rules the masses, and in Taurus, the sign of the voice, it trines Venus, which rules the voice, rising, conjunct Neptune. Uranus is near the MC, showing a phenomenal rise to prominence. Uranus also conjuncts a Quasar which is at 5 degrees of Taurus.

His chart is as beautiful as the man and large enough to contain all oppositions. By chance I watched the predawn sky as he died Venus a shiny morsel at the mouth of Hydra, snake goddess of death and rebirth while Leo's mane breaking the horizon with Saturn conjuct the great Lion's heart Regulus as rosy finger dawn climbed the evergreens. He has ascended.

Noah, he wasn't a god, he was a singer. Voice of an angel, but come on - in his last years, he cheated on his wife. He was obese, so one has to look to overindulgence in that area as well.
