Discussion about
Kirk Douglas, born 9 December 1916 at 10:15 AM in Amsterdam NY

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

"It Runs in the Family" starring Kirk Douglas and Michael Douglas was released today. It is a fun three-generation feel good movie about how the "sins of the father" are passed down through the generations. We're going to study the chart of Kirk Douglas, the archetypical tough guy who literally went from rags to riches in one lifetime. His resume includes over 80 films and 20 major awards including - a Golden Globe, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and lifetime achievement awards from the Oscars, American Film Institute, the Kennedy Center, and the Screen Actors Guild. His greatness goes much deeper than hard work and great looks. He is a leading philanthropist, an activist for justice and a dedicated scholar of the Torah.
  • Kirk likes to say, "I've made a career of playing sons of bitches." He is considered by many to be the epitome of the Hollywood hard man -- cocky, selfish, intense, and powerful fighter against "the system". When an actor plays an archetypal role over and over it must show up amongst the astrological archetypes of the chart. Let's catalog the signature.
  • "Breaking the Hollywood blacklist is the thing I am most proud of in my career." (Douglas credited blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo for the script of Sparticus.) What, in his chart, makes him capable of making decision that was considered crazy at the time?.
  • On January 28,1996, Kirk suffered a stroke that caused him to lose his ability to speak. It took enormous effort for him to overcome depression and learn how to talk again. The whole incident also led him back into religion in a very deep way. What was going on in his chart at the time of the depression, stroke, and digging deeper into his soul?

1) Hollywood hard man -- cocky, selfish, intense, and powerful fighter against "the system": Sun in fiery Sagittarius (freedom-loving) disposed by Jupiter in Aries (oversized warrior). Mars exalted in Capricorn in the 12th (Holywood) opposite Pluto (an intense fighter). Saturn anglular almost exactly on the 7th cusp (strong concern with structure and the system). Multiple squares, oppositions, and other hard aspects support the impression of being a "hard man".
2) "Breaking the Hollywood blacklist is the thing I am most proud of in my career." -- Aquarius rising with Uranus in the 1st House => he is a rebel who fights against unfairness and senseless rules of society.
3)On January 28,1996, Kirk suffered a stroke -- In his Solar Return for Dec 1995 just prior to the stroke, tranisting Uranus is conjunct his natal ASC and transiting Saturn is square his natal Sun. The Solar Return Uranus and his natal ASC fall on the 12th House cusp of his Solar Return chart set of Los Angeles.

Howdy, I know it is conventional wisdom to suggest that you cannot see death in a chart. However, in Kurt's chart this summer transiting Saturn will conjunct this Pluto and shortly thereafter transiting Pluto will conjunct his Sun! That looks pretty grim to me.

The Vedic / Sidereal chart of Kirk Douglas has a number of striking features that are directly reflected in his life. The first is the strength and location of lagna (1st) lord Saturn who is positioned in the positive 7th bhava (house) and is doubly strong both by being retrograde and by having 'dig bala' (directional strength). On the other hand, Saturn is in the rashi (sign) of his enemy the Moon, and receives a full one-sided aspect of bellicose Mars from the negative 12th bhava, making Saturn at the same time strong, unstable, and aggressive. Saturn by nature tends to be a loner and, as such, it is no wonder that KD is known as a strong, stubborn, independent, aggressive person who goes his own way.
The nakshatra (lunar mansion) rising is Uttara Ashada which indicates a person who is highly respected for their views and opinions (see, for example, Queen Elizabeth). Saturn's aspect from the 7th bhava back to the 1st contributes to his personal power and success, and the fact that Saturn is located in the 7th bhava (others) shows that his nature will unfold in a very public way.
The second major feature is the stellar 10th bhava of career which is tenanted by Venus strong in Libra and aspected only by benefic Jupiter from a friend's rashi in the 4th bhava. Venus creates at the same time Malavya Yoga, Khyati Yoga and Amala Yoga, and is also Rajyoga Karaka for Capricorn lagna by being ruler of both the 5th and 10th bhavas. Venus, planet of art, is aspected by Jupiter, planet of oratory and lord of the 3rd house of communication and performance, clearly indicating a career as an actor. KD started a 20 year Venus dasha (life cycle) in 1999. It is a tribute to the power of the yogas that Venus forms that despite the devastating stroke suffered a few years earlier, and his advanced age, he currently has a hit movie to his credit. The fact that Venus is the astrological Yogi indicates the great wealth that has come with his career success.
KD's talent and creativity are clearly shown by the superb Chatra Yoga -- an exalted Moon in the 5th bhava, made even stronger by being a little more than 1 degree from being full, and 5th lord Venus strong and stable in the 10th bhava.
His chart shows clear potential for stroke as Mercury (the nervous system), lord of the negative 6th bhava of acute illness, and Mars (force / damage) tenant the negative 12th bhava together. This potential was activated by his dasha - bhukti sequence which was Ketu - Rahu at this time. Malefic, unstable Ketu aspects Mars and Mercury from the 6th bhava, and Rahu conjoins both of them in the 12th bhava of hospitalization.
But Rahu, Mars and Mercury in the 12th tenant the rashi Sagittarius which is owned by the spiritually-inclined Jupiter who aspects them from the 4th bhava. The 4th and 12th are both moksha (liberation) bhavas, and Mercury is lord of the 9th bhava of higher learning. Ketu also inclines towards spiritual knowledge and this combination clearly indicates the increased interest in his faith that happened during the Ketu - Rahu period.

Kirk Douglas was involved in a helicopter(Aquarius) crash(Saturn), as Saturn transited his Ascendant(physical body) on 13Feb1991. When he had surgery on the compressed spine from this accident, within three weeks he suffered a stroke. Uranus at 1*Aquarius formed a quindecile with trMars at 16*Aquarius(cnj natal Uranus) on 28Jan1996. Together with trJupiter cnj natal twelfth-house Mars and trSaturn natal Chiron, this shows that the stroke was largely an unfortunate health consequence of the operation. The human body is not designed for invasive(Mars) surgery(Saturn), which can create as many problems as it solves. V.I. Lenin was shot in the neck in 1918, and shortly after the bullet was extracted in 1922, he likewise had the first of many strokes leading to his premature death. Unlike Lenin, Kirk Douglas was a wrestler and physical fitness buff besides being an actor, and his optimistic Sagittarian mental attitude overcame Saturn´s pessimism, and allowed him to regain(4*Cancer natal Pluto quindecile with) most of his lost speech(19*Cap. trMercury). Our colleagues in Uranian astrology might note here two more examples of 15*-multiple angles being more relevant than their 22*30´ angles.
We agree with Tony Louis on the first two questions. In regard to Paul Crumby´s comment, neither Saturn nor Pluto occupy or rule the eighth house nor make aspects with the eighth-house ruler Chiron. Conventional wisdom is therefore correct that such transits would not produce anyone´s demise unless accompanied by clear indications in the progressions and Solar Revolution. Kirk´s progressed MC now= natal Uranus at 16*Aquarius and his converse Ascendant now= natal Venus at 14*Scorpio. This explains the recent premiere of "It Runs in the Family", since Uranus relates to movies and Venus rules Kirk´s fourth house of home and family.

Kirk has Aquarius rising, with Uranus in its own sign in the first house making his immediate energy to the world appear obstinate and given toward bucking trends. If his natal chart is viewed with the Placidus house system, he has a stellium grouping in the eleventh house, further emphasizing his Aquarian rebelliousness, social idealism and hard-nosed traits (this same planetary grouping, further influenced by his magnanimous Sagittarian Sun and Mercury in this stellium, also attribute to his social-overseeing philanthropic tendencies).
Ostensibly, this stellium consists of the outward-energy planets of the Sun, Mercury and Mars. The Sun and Mercury in the illumination-of-my-own-truth sign of Sagittarius superimposed on the house of independence and doing things the hard way (Aquarius), along with Aquarius rising and Uranus in the first house, give him the natural energy to break the Hollywood blacklist (question 2). Kirk's decision was 'considered crazy at the time' due to his Aquarius/Uranus emphasis, impelling him to act ahead of his era.
Additionally, Kirk has a majority of planets (Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Neptune) in fire signs, with cardinal signs most represented by his planets (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto), thus giving him the overall signature of someone with the brute survivor instincts of an Aries. 'Cocky', 'selfish', 'fighter' and 'hard man' fit well into the Aries archetype (question 1). Aries is further emphasized in his natal chart with the ruling planet (Uranus) in the first house (attributed to Aries), and the Sun disposited by, and trining Jupiter in Aries.
Upon closer inspection, this eleventh house stellium of action and assertion type planets is interspersed with the asteroids Juno (tucked between the Sun and Mercury in Sagittarius), and Vesta (in Capricorn between Mercury in Sagittarius and Mars in Capricorn). The asteroids, representing distinct phases of the feminine goddess, add contrast, conflict and balance to this otherwise unchecked pocket of outgoing energy. (The elements associated with Sagittarius overlaid on the eleventh house of Aquarius are fire over air, conferring a very expansive, active and unrestrained power.)
Juno, representing the idealized wife form of the goddess (implying loyalty and fidelity), adds, in Sagittarius, to the rigid insistence of his own beliefs. Vesta, representing the self-contained completeness of the goddess unbound to marriage, embodies the characteristics of focus and commitment. Coupled with Mars, Vesta gives Kirk the ability to sublimate sexual energy into fighting for a cause, such as his 'powerful fighter against the system' persona depicted on-screen, and 'activist for justice' as experienced in real life. His Vesta (very contained) and Mars (assertive and active) conjunction of contrasting energies could also cause him to act overly aggressively in his sexual expression, on and off screen.
Given these observations, the signature for Kirk could be viewed as Aquarius, with Aries and other fire (in addition to the conditions stated above, the fire houses one, five and nine all contain planets) as supporting factors.

Sun trine Jupiter--rise to success. Mars exalted in Cap--very manly. Venus in Scorpio on MC--much sex appeal. Sun in Sagittarius--very outdoorsy, sporty, type of man--was once an acrobat. Sun sextile Uranus, dignified--very unique, very distinguished, very dignified; a rise. Venus square Uranus--plays the "love 'em and leave 'em" type guy. Uranus rising--a rise to distinction, trine Moon in Gemini--unusual fame and appeal to women and the public. Full Moon chart, Sun in Sag. opp. Gemini Moon--very emotional, very dramatic. Pluto at 3 d. Cancer--conjuncts US Venus and Jupiter, hence, very powerfully received in the US. Mars opposite Pluto--the "tough guy" image, the boxer, the gunslinger, the "SOB" image he speaks of. The killer Doc Holliday in "Gunfight at the OK Corral," and the fighter in "Champion."
Neptune in Leo--very dramatic, showy in films. Neptune conjunct Saturn--career in films. Both on descendant, angular--gives prominence and fame, as Uranus rising and angular does, also Venus being angular, on the MC. Aquarius rising--very chiseled features, with Saturn, ruler of Aquarius, also aspecting ascendant, giving chiseled features, like granite or rock, and Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, rising, giving an outstandingly handsome appearance. Jupiter trine Mercury--since Jupiter rules Mercury, which is placed in Sagittarius, this is fortunate, to be trine its own ruler, partially offsetting the detrimental placement of Mercury.
