Discussion about
Clint Eastwood, born 31 May 1930 at 5:35 PM in San Francisco CA

This discussion is imported from the  comment board on the  previous astrodatabank.com website.

With another Academy Award season upon us, let's look at the chart of a legendary actor and director, Clint Eastwood. This year he has been nominated for Best Director and Best Actor and his movie, "Million Dollar Baby" is up for Best Picture. Always a popular actor, Clint gets better and better as he ages, with his later movies showing new depth in theme and character study.
  • He's been quoted as saying: "There's a rebel lying deep in my soul. Anytime anybody tells me the trend is such and such, I go the opposite direction. I hate the idea of trends. I hate imitation.. I got where I am by coming off the wall." His characters have uttered memorable lines like, "Go ahead, make my day," and "Dyin's too good for ya." Where are the rebel and tough guy in his chart?
  • Clint's Scorpio Ascendant might be one clue to the silent anguish he portrays in his characters. But what about that Gemini sun? Where does this combination play out in his life and work?
  • Actors whom Clint has directed have remarked on how quickly he moves his films along. He shot "Million Dollar Baby" in just 37 days! What in the chart indicates the speed with which he works and the quality of performance he delivers himself and elicits from others

Look at that Saturn, all alone on its side of the chart - like it's both directing the other planets and in a stand-off with them. Living on its own terms. (And isn't the second house about self-worth?)

P.S. . . . . umm, how is Saturn (10 Cap) square to Mercury (23 Tau)? Is that a mistake? Someone please tell me.

Whoops - I see now, it's a sesquiquadrate at 133 degrees. (Saturn to Mercury) I didn't see that little tail on the square. It fooled you too, Anon.

1. I would look to the squares of Uranus - to Saturn and Venus to indicate rebellion. Myth had Saturn killing his father, Uranus. These squares would also give some idea about his love life - Saturn Opposition Venus - he's probably cool and withdrawn, which can be very sexy. Most of the characters he's played in his films have this element as well. The Venus Square Uranus would like drama and change.
2. Regarding the combo of Gemini Sun and Scorpio ASC - the Gemini sun gives a voice to the depths of the Scorpio. I generally look at the ASC as the path a person must take to reach the soul as represented by the Sun. This is a man with a lot to say and a lot of ideas that are colored by the ability to reach deep emotionally.
I would also look at Neptune in Virgo in the 10th as influencing the topics he deals with - his characters are working people - generally not much into illusions. The square to his Sun reflects that he wouldn't necessarily live this life himself.
3. Regarding speed - that would be the Gemini again, but his retrograde Mercury in Taurus would also force him to be meticulous - so he works quickly, but with care that the first time something is tried, it comes out right. Mars in the 6th (the house of work) in Aries shows someone who sets his sight on a goal and moves toward it without letting much get in the way.

I could almost believe that the sun is in the eighth house or at least closer to the eighth house cusp, however action between Scorpio and Gemini is always an indicator of a creative struggle, with a double edged sword. His inner struggle is exacerbated by the chart pattern itself. Eastwood is the product of the powerful relationships he has entered into with the majority of his planets on the western side of the chart. What he calls his rebel buried deep inside is the signature of a retrograde saturn, signifying a weak or nonexistant father figure in childhood. What that means in common terms is that he must develop his own value system based on his own life experience and can never rely on his father's teachings or example. So with the Venus/Saturn opposition to torque the situation ( simply, the experiences and people he encounters challenge what he has established as an ego structure ) Clint Eastwood has a keen sense of what will work for him and what definately won't reguardless of external facts. Mars in Aries in the sixth house indicates how he handles co-workers which might account for his driving style as he is able to generate a ton of energy for a project. this could be construed as speed but since his projects of late have all been extrordinary I would say that his retrograde saturn in Capricorn has finally come into it's own. Accuracy as well as economy of motion is more the answer than raw speed. This also implies that his ability to take his story from the mental plane to the final product has been honed to perfection. The signature of the product of a Quincunx ( in this case between Scorpio and Gemini ). We'll see at the Oscar's wont we?

The biography here states: "Eastwood won the Best Director Oscar for his film, "Unforgiven," in which he also acted; the picture was released on March 29, 1993. "
Huh??? The picture was released in 1992. I am deeply disappointed by the factual errors in Astrodatabank.

1. Rebel...hates trends...tough characters? Chart ruler, Pluto, squares Uranus. From COSI: "...people who are very much out of the ordinary...putting the gun to someone's head(!)...the tendency to strive for new things." The ruler of the 3rd house of communication, Saturn, also squares Uranus. Again from COSI: "...the urge for freedom, a provocative conduct, an act of violence."
2. Sun? The communicative Gemini Sun rules the MC. The Sun as well as its dispositor Mercury, and Mercury's dispositor Venus, is in tense aspect to the ruler of the 3rd House, Saturn. The Sun also squares Neptune (ruler of motion pictures and of Eastwood's creative 5th house ) which is conjunct the MC.
3. Fast worker? The ruler of the 6th house is energetic Mars which is posited in the 6th in the sign of its rulership, Aries. This Mars is final dispositor of the chart as well as co-ruler of the ascendant. It tightly trines the MC and Neptune.

1. Radical, tough guy...I note that Mr Eastwood has his ruling planet Pluto, together with Venus, in Cancer, so he is actually a very sensitive, caring guy who really seeks social change...but he has Aries placements that show that he doesn't want to be a 'softy', namely Mars and Uranus in or near his Aries 6th House. It is through his work that he appears as this dynamic, decisive male. In a way, this is a facade, but being action-oriented in his work works for him. Another instance of this in his chart is his creative Gemini Sun in Gemini, which rules his 10th House, in sextile to his Leo Moon, which disposits his ruling planet. Together with Aries Uranus ruling his 4th House, he has learned from his family that only through taking action will he get his needs met, and I see that his mother was probably a very dynamic woman(Leo Moon, Sun in 7th House), who may have had a problem with family drama(Aquarius 4th House), and there is possibility of physical abuse(Mars and Uranus in Aries, squaring the Cancer placements), either from her or from his father to her. Clint may suffer some kind of chronic depression, and he remedies this by obsessive activities, throwing himself into his work. He doesn't want to be seen as sensitive and 'needy', which only gets him down further. 2. Scorpio-Gemini...The Gemini Sun gives him talent with communications, which certainly helps out in his work as an actor, and no doubt finds expression in his relationships, with its 7th House placement. I see Mercury there as well. Mercury is in sextile to his ruling planet Pluto. These facts are good, because Scorpio rising is not, of itself, an open communicator. Saturn in Capricorn, the sign covering his 3rd House, makes him more of a brooder, and acting provides some outlet for his pain that many of us can relate to and appreciate. 3. Urgency...as I've said, he tends to throw himself into his work, with the Fire signs covering his practical houses(2nd, 6th and 10th), with Mars actually in Aries in his 6th. Clint is a very competitive worker, and with his 10th House ruler in Gemini, he is also very fast physically and on the uptake--there is a good mutual understanding between actor and director which facilitates things. Thanks for the chart Bill Lindsay www.astroswift.com

To Anon about the mistaken release date-- I checked up, and I see that you were right--the correct year was 1992. However, the error could have been simple typo, and I have not yet found any evidence that it has affected my answer to the questions. Plus, this is the first error in dates I have seen on this site. Even so, the spirit of the site can only be soiled by those who seek to bust others down.

oh man I hit the wrong... and what I wrote didn't get submitted... I'll reiterate here....
1) Cap. in Sat. alone can make any guy "tough!" Combine that with it opposing his Venus in loving cancer and both squaring erratic Uranus in fiery Aries in the 5th (no wonder the school-yard brawls as well as the theatrical ones). Not to forget to mention the sometimes excessive aggressiveness with Mars in Aries a la carte!
2) "The Actor"- Leo-moon(emotions) squaring his Aries Mars in 6th(his work) may attribute to the silent anguish he portrays in his characters.....
Life and Work: With Scorpio rising and Sun ruling mid-heaven... Sun in Gem. in 7th(others).... Sun/Mercury energy making for fine "director" of others.
3) I've never met a slow Gemini-- especially with Aries involved. Fine-quality Taurus Mercury adding the tenaciousness required of the job he does. Chiron and north node in Taurus in 6th-- bonus! As my success-guru (on Sylver.com radio) says: "Speed plus Precision = POWER!!!"
*"Billion Dollar Baby! Clint is....!" What an 8th!

Sidereally Clint has Mars and Rahu (the mysterious, worldly, unusual north node of the Moon )closely conjuncted. They reside in Aries and Mars is strong by degree (between 5 and 25) . They reside in the seventh house of partners and business. This would explain his unusual qualities and the swiftness which he does business. Rahu also gives a restlessness or obsessive quality. And what is most interesting is Rahu trines Neptune by one degree, giving a worldly, obsessive knowledge about films, in the eleventh house of friends or associates. It also puts Neptune there as a sensitive quality with his friends is there. He must be a dream to work with, as I believe I have heard others say. Uranus then is on the cusp of the six twelve axis, showing an unusual psyche or dream states.

Five divorces with sun in VII house indicate, to have a partner is very important for Clint Eastwood but Sun aplying a square to Neptune he idealize women, later he grow desillusioned and get divorce. For pictures he used to select not beautiful women but those with some special attractiveness.Moon in leo disposed by his Sun. The ruler of his sign Mercury in Taurus make him a persistent slow thinker, with lots of practical money making ideas.Jupiter in Gemini is found in good communicators coupled with slow thinker and Mars in Aries( action) + asc. in Scorpio, he prefers action and few words in pictures. At the beginning a Jack of all trades like many Gemini people,Sun aplying to Neptune between two signs, he can work as an artist or directing films. He has the classical aspect of public servants, Saturn in Cap and neptune in Virgo so, he worked as a Mayor on Carmel. a Neptunian place I will say.
Mars and Saturn are final dispositors so, he will keep working until the end. He learned to play piano to attract women, Venus(artistic) conj. Pluto (sex), disposed by the Moon in Leo,to attract the attention of women as he mentioned on tv. His Saturn in Capricorn will ensure him a reputable and solid position in the film industry.

Where are the rebel and tough guy in his chart?
Most rebels are not trying to be rebels. They are comfortable with their own senses of expression, and if that differs from the popular expressions of the times, they are labeled "rebels".
Uranus is usually given the credit for rebelliousness. Uranus is also a great innovator. If Mercury represents the dual personality, the Uranus represents the multiple personality.
Mr. Eastwood's Aries Uranus resides in the 5th House (Porphyry) providing him with a lifetime of creative innovation. He knows what is fun for him (5th House), and he goes for it (Aries). It you want to play with him, you play his games or walk away. Is this tough?
What about that Gemini sun? Where does this combination play out in his life and work?
In Mr. Eastwood's life, the Gemini Sun placement in the 7th House would indicate multiple marriages and/or business partners throughout the life. Gemini also placed on the 8th House cusp would imply multiple lovers.
The Sun bears no Ptolemaic aspects and is therefore a maverick, using a more pure, or less tainted energy of expression. What you see is what you get. Of course, the Gemini can bear out in multiples, so everyone you see in him are who you get. Unaspected Gemini can be anything it wants, ideally suited for acting roles, and the various professional roles behind the camera.
The introversion may be indicated by the Sun's ruler being in retrogression, which also causes the Gemini to talk slow ~ an oddity from the usual Gemini speed-talkers! The thing with introverts is that they constantly observe the acute details of others, providing them with a portfolio of characters for professional use.
What in the chart indicates the speed with which he works and the quality of performance he delivers himself and elicits from others?
Saturn and Fortuna share the same degree of Capricorn in the 2nd House. This can indicate that conservative spending and/or responsible use of resources rewards with fortune! Cutting waste cuts time, and his example inspires and allows others to also cut to the chase.
The natural ruler of the 2nd House resides in the house of his investors' money (8th House), and approaches the opposition to Saturn within a couple degrees. This makes him aware of his responsibility toward finances, and allows his investors to reap the rewards provided by his own Fortuna.
This 2nd House Saturn also receives a waxing quincunx from his Sun, obligating the ego (Sun) to provide a material service (waxing quincunx) toward all money-making ventures. That is, his ego is tied up in accepting and perpetuating traditionally (Saturn) responsible values (2nd House).
Mr. Eastwood has two septiles (51 degrees 26 minutes) in his chart, one of which involves the Saturn/Fortuna conjunct with the Ascendant. Septiles show what provides inspiration to us. This may indicate he is inspired to be financially responsible, so it's not difficult and does not feel like a responsibility at all.
The other septile is between the Moon and Sun, indicating one who is inspired by both his ego and his emotions, making an adaptable persona that is very comfortable with the self, which also inspires others who work with him.

1.Where are the rebel and tough guy in his chart?
Saturn, Pluto in a T-square with Uranus in the fifth house as the focal planet shows the macho rebel. The same Pluto rules the ascendant. Also Mars trine Neptune/MC means that he can "play" the tough guy very well.
2. Scorpio Ascendant/Gemini sun - Where does this combination play out in his life and work?
The Gemini Sun is unaspected and disposited by a retrograde Mercury that is also barely aspected. The Sun is quincunx a retrograde Saturn that also rules the third house. Saturn will not progress direct in this lifetime. The model of "the strong silent type" who has a hard time with verbal expression. Also probably introverted. . 3. What in the chart indicates the speed with which he works and the quality of performance he delivers himself and elicits from others?
Mars in Aries in the sixth trine Neptune/MC makes him a fast worker. Mercury in the seventh, co-ruling the tenth and dispositing Neptune in Virgo in the tenth also makes him very efficient at creating the illusion that movies are, and at communicating that vision to others. Mercury in Taurus helps him create the vision in form. The Sun in the seventh certainly helps with co-workers, with Moon in Leo bringing the drama.

To Anon: Whether a typo or an oversight, errors are hardly the norm in the Astrodatabank bios. I hope you can convert your "deep disappointment" to appreciation to those who dedicate quite a bit of time to the intention behind this site.
To Tresa: You point out a Leo Moon in square to his Mars in Aries. I'm wondering if others use out of sign aspects, and to what success.
To Luis: You description of his Rx Mercury in Taurus "a persistent slow thinker" is evident in him, what we see as a person and what we see as a actor. Both Mars and Saturn (hard, long work life) have dignity being in their own sign, while Jupiter is in detriment and disposed by Mercury, the ruler of his Sun.
The bio refers to Clint Eastwood's craggy face. Where is this apparent from his chart? The wide square between Mars and Pluto? The Venus opposed to Saturn? (Carter assigns skin to Saturn.) If we didn't know what he looked like, for example, if would we see this so readily? He has the face of someone who looks like he's lived hard, worked hard, and maybe didn't always wear sunscreen out on the ranch.
The bio also quotes him as "just keep my big mouth shut." That is a tough lesson for a Gemini Sun.

To Paula R. Gassmann : Why is the error not corrected even after two days? Mr. Eastwood won the Oscar for best director on 3/29/1993.
Astrodatabank is sloppy in the case of M.Stewart also. One anon. posted that the bio needed to be updated after she was convicted in March 2004. He/she also gave the correct date of M.Stewart's conviction in that post. The webmaster acknowledged this and updated the bio BUT the date of conviction was typed as March 6, 2004 instead of the correct date(March 5,2004)!
You should command appreciation, not demand it.
