占星家们运用一种叫做“出生图”的图表来找出一个人与太阳、月亮和行星之间的特殊关系。一副出生图，便是某一个体出生时，在他/她准确的出生年月日，在其出生地所能观看到的天空的真实图景。但是，占星家们并不是绘制出一副真实天空的图画，而是运用象征符号来表示日月和行星于那个时空点，在天空中的分布。
