A column by Robert Hand

Editor's note: This article, written in 2001, is based on the birth time of 7:36 am on February 27, 1928, as it was known then. In 2014, a new biography was published which gives new information. Issac Starkman rectified the time to 10:18.10 PM (see this chart).
For historical reasons, we do not update the birth time and leave this article unchanged. It may serve as teaching material nevertheless.

Ariel Sharon and the Palestinian Crisis

This week we are going to look at the current prime minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon. He is of particular interest not only because of his involvement in what seems to be the unending Arab-Israeli conflict, but because in that conflict he is widely perceived as a hawk. Many believe that his appointment as prime minister means that peace is further away than ever.

Ariel Sharon’s birth data is from Lois Rodden’s Astrodatabank: February 27, 1928; at 7:36 am EET in Kafr Malal, in what was then Palestine. The coordinates are given as 32N11 and 34E54. The time is indicated as being “from memory,” and may be up to a half hour off. This could be critical to the chart because in the half hour before birth, the rising sign changed from Pisces to Aries. However, I believe that the chart for this time is close to the correct time and that he does have Aries rising. Here’s why I think so.

Ariel SharonThe given time gives Sharon a Twelfth House Sun. As we have already seen with President Bush, a Twelfth House Sun is no barrier to becoming successful or famous. But Aries rising makes Mars a ruler of the Ascendant, which is appropriate for someone with not only a military background, but a military style as well. This time also gives him a rising degree that is straddled by Uranus just above the horizon and Jupiter just below. The Uranus gives him a brusque demeanor, impatient of the niceties of everyday diplomatic language, while the Jupiter in Aries gives him the appearance of being large, imposing and dominant. Furthermore, Mars, the planetary ruler of his Ascendant, is in Capricorn, the sign of its exaltation. This is the ultimate military Mars, and it is in the Tenth House of career (although on the cusp of the Eleventh).

The Twelfth House Sun simply tells us that there is much to Sharon that we do not see. Specifically, I believe that Sharon exemplifies a common pattern found in men with the Sun in Pisces or Cancer, a pattern that is reinforced by other factors in the chart as well. (Note to any male readers with this Sun placement: this pattern is not by any means inevitable and tends to occur in males with a very traditional masculine upbringing.)

Pisces and Cancer are the most female of all of the signs of the zodiac. And note that I said “female,” not “effeminate.” There is a difference! Both signs indicate an extreme sensitivity, and their natives normally develop a rich, inner emotional life. However, this very sensitivity causes difficulty for men who exhibit it, and who are not encouraged to develop it in a positive manner. As a result, many men with this placement go in the opposite direction and develop an exaggerated kind of macho behavior and what appears to be an unfeeling shell to protect themselves.

If the Pisces or Cancer Sun is in the Twelfth House, this makes that much easier to do, because then we have a much stronger appearing and more traditionally masculine fire sign rising, Aries in the case of the Pisces Twelfth House Sun, Leo in the case of Cancer. (George W. Bush with his Twelfth House Sun in Cancer may be another example of this syndrome, although his Cancer Sun is a bit more obvious in his behavior than Sharon’s Pisces Sun.) I am sure that in his personal and domestic life, where it is safe for him to do so, Sharon can be very emotional and sentimental. But to the outer world he will always appear the hard, strong man, the classic alpha male.

Another combination in Sharon’s chart that reinforces the difference between an inner sensitivity and an outer hardness is the Moon in close square to Neptune. At the moment he was born, the square was getting closer. This means that the combination was intensifying at the time of his birth. This configuration can either increase one’s sensitivity to the feelings of others, or result in a peculiar kind of emotional confusion and lack of clarity.

The Moon-Neptune square is in turn reinforced by Sharon’s natal Mercury moving backward (retrograde) in Pisces. Mercury’s next aspect (after it crosses into Aquarius) will be an opposition to Neptune. All of this indicates that his thought patterns are not necessarily logical, rational or obvious to other people. If I were negotiating with Sharon on any issue that he holds dear, I would not rely on sheer logic to make my case. If he does not feel that something is right, if his gut does not tell him so, he will not be easy to persuade by logic or facts.

So this is the man who is heading the government of Israel during these times. Is the world in greater trouble for this, or will Sharon surprise us as other conservatives have done by doing exactly what conservatives would not allow liberals to do? Next we will look at the transits.

Ariel Sharon - The Transits

We looked at the chart of Ariel Sharon to see what sort of a man now leads the government of Israel. Now, we will look at the major indications of the next two years and see what kind of impact these may have on Sharon and, therefore, what kind of impact he will have on the world.

Sharon transitsThe year began with Saturn making several transits to Sharon's natal chart. Last year and early this year Saturn made several passes directly over his Moon and at about the same time was 90 degrees away (square) from his Neptune. You may recall from last week that Sharon has a Moon, Neptune, Mercury combination that suggests something other than a strict, logical mind. Sensitive yes, logical not so much! Saturn on the Moon suggests that during this period Sharon was feeling rather emotionally isolated and not very charitable. This is usually considered a "difficult" transit. Yet Sharon became prime minister under this transit! This should caution people against thinking that a difficult transit is bad for everything in a person's life. When we look at a difficult transit we must always examine its precise effects and not see a general tendency toward good or bad luck.

But, in general, Saturn to the Moon and 90 degrees to Neptune is not good for clear, optimistic or positive thinking. Then after the last transit of Saturn square Neptune (which happened at the end of March) Saturn will make another 90-degree transit to Sharon's Mercury. This happens in the first week of May just as this column appears in print. Recall that Mercury makes an opposition to his Neptune and a square to his Moon. We can expect that at about the time this column appears Sharon is likely to do one of the following: 1) cut off some important negotiation, or have someone else cut off one with him, or 2) assume an attitude of mental rigidity that could have an important effect. But we cannot tell for certain whether this will have any observable effect that we can see in the news. It could be completely personal. Sharon's Mercury is in his Twelfth House, which is, among other things, a house of secrets.

Transits for Fall 2001

After that, the first part of this year is not a terribly dramatic one for Sharon personally. Things do not begin to heat up until the fall. In October and November the planet Jupiter makes what astrologers call a station on his natal Pluto. What actually happens from the point of view of the Sun is that the Earth begins to pass by Jupiter in its orbit. From our point of view on the Earth it looks as if Jupiter stops going forward and begins to go backward. This is just like what happens when we speed up to pass another car on the highway. A station occurs when the planet changes from seeming to go forward to seeming to go backward or the other way around. This is a very powerful kind of transit and should have a strong effect on Sharon. I find this transit somewhat troubling because it coincides with the second of two transiting Saturn opposition transiting Pluto events this year. Saturn-Pluto conjunctions (0 degrees), squares (90 degrees), and oppositions (180 degrees) have since World War II coincided with difficulties in the Middle East, especially those that feature the Arabs and the Israelis.

On top of this the symbolism of Jupiter conjunct Pluto suggests that Sharon will make a heroic effort to improve, reform or completely alter some situation that has become difficult for him. The transit occurs in Sharon's Fourth House, which is not only his own home, i.e., place of residence, but also his country, his native land. And Jupiter in his chart is the ruler of his Ninth House (Sagittarius), which indicates foreign nations, foreigners in general, and anyone who is not of his own people. It also rules his Twelfth House of secrets and hidden things.

After the stationary transit of October-November Jupiter makes one more pass over his Pluto just in time to coincide with the third Saturn-Pluto opposition next May. During this time Uranus begins to make a series of 90-degree transits to his natal Moon and oppositions to his natal Neptune. These are the same natal planets that Saturn hit at the time of his appointment as prime minister. The same irrational, emotional and perhaps oversensitive combination that we have recently seen activated by Saturn will be activated again by Uranus, the planet of sudden, hasty and often rash moves. So just as we need Sharon to be especially clear-headed and rational, he is probably not going to be. He may be touchy, rash, and prone to making snap decisions based on instinct, an instinct that may not be at its best at the time. Does this mean that things are going to get worse between Israel and the Palestinians? I suspect so, but remember that this is the chart of one man. It is not the chart of a nation. If these transits work themselves out through his personal life, there will not be a serious problem. If they work themselves out in his career, there could be one.
