Biography
Italian-Austrian royalty, the consort of Charles I, the last ruler of Habsburg, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, among her 52 titles.
Born a Princess, Zita married into the Habsburgs just as they began their demise, on 10/21/1911. She and her husband, Emperor Karl, were crowned in the middle of WW I, on 12/30/1916, Budapest; two years later, in 1918, they were unceremoniously deposed following the defeat of Austria's forces and spent the rest of their lives trying to regain the throne.
She died in a Swiss Convent Home on 3/14/1989, Zizers, Switzerland, leaving seven surviving children and 30 grandchildren.
