Biography
Mexican politician, a bland and enigmatic man elected the new Mexican president 8/21/1994, taking office on 11/31/1994. A 42-year-old economist, he has never held elected office but has worked behind the scenes as a dutiful technocrat. He was an accidental candidate, hurriedly chosen after Colosio was gunned down 3/23/1994. Formerly, Zedillo has worked as the uncharismatic campaign manager for Colosio.
From humble beginning, Zedillo was an electrician's son, born with a high IQ. He married Nilda Patricia; five kids. He sincerely wants Mexico to grow and the election was seen as being as clean as possible in a government steeped in corruption and drug money.
When Zedillo devalued the peso on 12/20/1994, it plummeted, starting a stunning disintegration of Mexico's economy. By March 1995, a $53 billion rescue package, including $20 billion from the U.S., failed to stabilize the economy as interest rates passed 90%.
