Biography
Chinese royalty, the last Emperor. He was the most powerful military and political leader during the last days of the Ch'ing Dynasty, with an influence that was still in force after the fall of the dynasty. A shrewd politician, he was able to take either side to his own benefit.
After Dr. Sun Yat-Sen had overthrown the dynasty and established the Republic of China, the country was still not united as one. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen resigned his post as Provisional president in favor of the mighty Yuan Shih-K'ai in an attempt to unify the country, and Yuan was elected President of the Republic in October 1913. On 1/17/1916, Yuan proclaimed himself emperor, beginning a new dynasty. He was forced to give up the throne on 4/29/1916 by Sun Yat-Sen and his followers. He died a heartbroken man on 6/06/1916 in his former palace.
Yuan Shih-K'ai had one wife, nine concubines, 17 sons and 15 daughters.
