Biography
Russian writer, most popular contemporary poet and leading spokesman for the post-Stalin youth. In his poetry and popular poetry readings, he raised issues that were critical of Krushchev, Brezhnev and the Soviets but was never arrested because of his popularity In 1974 he publicly protested the arrest and deportation of Solzhenitsyn.
Yevtushenko moved to Moscow in 1944, where he studied at the Gorky Institute of Literature from 1951 to 1954. He wrote "Zima Junction" while he was on geological survy trip with his father. The narrative poem was published in 1956. In 1961, with the publication of "Babi Yar" he gained international fame. In this piece, not published in Russia until 1984, he soundly denounced Nazi and Russian anti-Semitism.
He became an activist in the eyes of Soviet youth and the intelligentsia with his demands for greater artistic freedom and for his criticism of Soviet bureaucracy. He was allowed to travel widely in the West and carried his activist messages abroad until 1963. With the publication of "A Precocious Autobiography" in English, privileges were withdrawn though only for two years.Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he remained politically active and with the fall of the Soviet empire, he continues to work, write, speak and rouse to action.
