John Sergeant Wise

Biography

American author and leader in Virginia. He fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was Virginia Military Institute New Market Cadet at the Battle of New Market. He sustained wounds while standing his post guarding the Cadets' baggage train, and did not take part in the charge. Upon the end of the War, John S. Wise was initiated a Brother of Beta Theta Pi in 1867 at the University of Virginia. Wise then represented Virginia in the 48th United States Congress as a member of the Readjuster Party. He died on May 12, 1913, aged 66.

Wise of Virginia, 1806-1876" by Barton Haxall Wise (Macmillan, 1899), p. 118: "If you had not left the house at ten o'clock that night, if you had stayed four hours later, you would have seen me. I was born at two o'clock in the morning of December 27, 1846."
